| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | May 2017 | 29 ortencia and Juergen Roesler, original Four Seasons residents since 2013, have a wonderful courtyard casita that they transformed into a "quilters paradise." The Roeslers have been married for 26 years. Hortencia, originally from Mexico, and Juergen, originally from Germany, found a new common ground in quilting. What they really enjoy is learning techniques used in traditional piecework. The couple shares the passion for creating beautiful quilts. They have made their casita into a wonderful, organized space for piecing and assembling their fantastic quilts. Their quilting began when Hortencia took a continuing education course on quilting in 2011. After a few classes and seeing her enthusiasm, Juergen decided to join her. (He was picking her up anyway!) The rest is history. The Roeslers are active in three different quilt guilds and have won numerous awards for their work. Hortencia laughed that "Juergen does the hard part; he cuts out my quilts pieces for me, and I do the rest." They have a number of quilts in process at any given time. Juergen explained some of the history of a new quilt he is assembling about the Underground Railroad. Some of the quilt blocks depict wagon wheels, bear claws and other images that tell the story. Juergen showed how, in another quilt, he used a variety of techniques in the piecework, such as appliqué and paper piecing. The Roeslers make their quilts from traditional, time-honored patterns; however, each quilt is unique in the way that it showcases their expertise and artistry, down to the smallest detail. It looks difficult, but they make it look like a lot of fun! Hortencia also plays tennis, gardens, watercolor painting and makes jewelry. Juergen is installing a patio paver design in the courtyard that's going to be fabulous! See? You never know how many interesting and talented folks are around. Hortencia said that there are many more accomplished quilt enthusiasts in our community, "better than me" (hard to believe). Thank you, Hortencia and Juergen, for sharing your love of quilting with the Four Seasons community. Featured Artists: The Roeslers H
