FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2017 43 Join us for a FREE sock hop (construction work permitting) on June 16, 5 to 8:30 pm. This is a BYOB event. We provide water and ice. We encourage you to buy your dinner from Smitty's and enjoy a fun evening of music and dance. One of the older (90) dancers in my class told me she read that line dancing is a good exercise as you age because it works the brain as well as the body. Learning anything new is a good workout for the brain, but combined with moving the body in memorized steps to music the exercise becomes fun. Line dancing is very forgiving. Most steps can be modified or slightly changed to accommodate some limitations in movement. As long as you are moving in the same direction as everyone else, we call it a variation. Let's face it, everyone who lives here is getting older. It is important that we continue to use our minds and bodies to age gracefully. Whatever your level of movement is, it can be strengthened by activity. We keep our minds younger by trying new activities. Living here, the possibilities are almost endless: active sports, swimming, walking in the pools, cards, board games, crafts and of course, dancing. Line dancing may seem complicated, but I teach one step at a time in the Beginner's class. Remember, no one was born dancing, we all had to learn each step. The next beginners class starts in July. The beauty of these classes is that the group is usually small, six to ten people, so I have time to work on the basic steps that make learning the dances easier. I usually have one to two assistants to help everyone during the thirty-minute class. Classes every Tuesday: Intermediate 3-3:45, Advanced 3:45-4:30. Beginners (odd months only) 2:30 to 3 pm. Come watch or join us. Classes are $1 per week, which goes towards our holiday party. Entertainment and dance music will be by the popular Skyline Xpress, one of the best all-around dance bands in Southern California. And a very good catered dinner is included. Check the poster in the Lodge for more information, and get your tickets early because these events always sell out well before the ticket deadline. We are sometimes asked: Why so many dances, and where did they all come from? Simply put, dances have evolved over thousands of years, and have come from many cultures and lands. Dances have been used for celebrations, expressions of emotions (sadness or joy), rituals, telling stories, and simply moving to the music. No matter the history, we here at Four Seasons dance for joy of it. And best of all, you can learn and have fun dancing at any level you want, from the basics to intermediate to advanced – it's your choice. Take a look at the photos of last year's Summer Fun Dinner Dance and you'll see regular folks having lots of fun dancing to good music.
