60 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2017 Bocce Ball ENCOURAGEMENT GOES FAR ON A LONG JOURNEY As summer approaches, we all begin to think about spending more time out of doors, getting healthy and looking our best. Attending TOPS might provide just the encouragement and motivation you need to get fit and healthy. Did you know that TOPS has been encouraging people in Taking Pounds Off Sensibly since 1948? Also, did you know that there is a wonderful TOPS chapter right here in our Four Seasons community? How convenient is that? It is comprised of a group of encouraging, helpful and fun residents who want to be healthy and maybe even lose a few pounds on this journey together. All of us on the TOPS journey know very well the benefits of support. By attending our weekly meetings here at Four Seasons and supporting each other, we gain accountability and the knowledge that we are not in this alone. Active participation in our TOPS chapters helps us share our successes and challenges together. While it is easy to see the benefits we gain from receiving support from others, there is a benefit to providing that support. In fact, offering health and weight loss support to others makes a big difference in someone else's life and a positive difference in our own. So, if you have been thinking about improving your overall health, come and join us. We are a very open and encouraging group and new members, men and women, are always welcome. Feel free to stop by at any meeting. We meet every Tuesday at 8:30 am, at the Lodge. ~ Vivian Walker TOPS Play into May continued on the old courts outside the RCN building. This is because courts at the Summit had improvements delayed. The improvements are approved and under new contract. Keep watching at the Summit. By Breeze publishing in June, play may have resumed, we will be throwing accurately on smooth, safe, easy to enter courts. The word "bocce" comes from an Italian word which is plural, means "to bowl." The small white ball called pallino, is thrown first to start the game. Rules are very simple: get your ball as close to the pallino as possible in order to score a point. If more balls of the same color as the closest one also get close, these additionally score points. Much like pool, bocce requires players to take turns. This makes it an ideal game for socializing in between turns. Often cheers, or laughter can be heard. No one has an edge in Bocce Ball unless, of course, they have played for years. We generally play a game to 12 points. Two games are generally played and take approximately 1-1/2 hours. We mix and match so no team is expert and change numbers on a team so no one is left out. Bocce Ball is played several times a week at the Summit. The current schedule is 9 am Tuesdays and 3 pm Wednesdays. Times change based on weather. Many groups play at different times. Call the Summit desk (951) 769-6444 and ask the attendant for current times of play. Balls are always available for play anytime. There is a third set of balls now available which are slightly smaller. There are two each of four colors. Great for kids and families and adaptive to three teams or four teams of two balls each. If you would like to come early, meet others and learn the game, or practice before scheduled times, or on a different day or time, call Mike Saperstein (951) 769-7909, Larry Anderson (951) 846-3123, or Jeanine Baker (951) 797-0833. ~ Mike Saperstein Publia Quiles thinks hard to plan a defensive or an accurate scoring throw to score on Lodge Bocce Ball Court in May Mike Saperstein throws carefully to score closest to pallino, with beautiful roses near dirt courts at the Lodge
