Have you ever watched a movie, or heard a song from a movie that you could not believe was done that long ago? Its happened to many of us who may have only been familiar with a later version of that same song. One of my first experiences with this discovery of re-done songs was the classic "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." I was only familiar with The Platter's recording of it. Well, the song goes back to 1933 when Jerome Kern & Otto Harbach wrote it for the musical "Roberta." The song went on to be resung and recorded by such artists as Irene Dunne, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Randolph Scott, Kathryn Grayson, Eartha Kitt and many others. Here's a list of just a few songs redone in the many years of American Music. Blueberry Hill: Sammy Kaye, Gene Autry, Fats Domino. Blue Moon: Billy Eckstine, Mel Torme, The Marcels, Elvis. Sea Of Love: Phil Phillips, The Honey Drippers. Sukiyaki: Kyu: Sakamoto, Taste Of Honey. Proud Mary: Creedence Clearwater, Ike & Tina Turner. I Wish You Love: Keely Smith, Gloria Lynn, Nancy Wilson. I've Got You Under My Skin: Eleanor Powell, Frank Sinatra, The Four Seasons. Please Mr. Postman: The Marvelettes, The Beatles, The Carpenters Dance & Shout: The Jackson Five, Shaggy. La Bamba: Richie Valens, Los Lobos. Mony Mony: Tommy James, Billy Idol. Money: Barrett Strong, The Kingsmen, The Beatles, The Flying Lizards. I'm pretty sure by now you get the idea of what I'm saying in regards to this subject of remade songs. You are probably thinking of so many others we left off this list, but there is just so much space to fill a page. So whether you want to sing a song that has been redone or maybe in its original music and arrangement, we hope we will have what you need at our next karaoke gathering with Barb Miller, Rosie Ingalls and D.J. Blast. On Fri., June 23 we will be in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Our shows begin at 5:30 pm until 9 pm. We hope you can join us for some singing, dancing and new friendships. We look forward to meeting you. We will always leave a mic on for you. 26 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2017 | Karaoke Group Chorale The Chorale of Sun Lakes finished its Spring Concert last month on a high "note," as they say, and moves into a hiatus for the summer months. We will reconvene on Mon., Sept. 11 to begin rehearsals for our 27th Holiday Concert. After the death of his 93-year-old father, Director Bill Kliewer decided to retire from the Chorale, purchase an RV, and do the traveling he and his wife Heidi, had put off for many years. Chorale members send Bill off with their heartfelt thanks, and wish the Kliewers "Happy Trails." The new director of the Chorale is Mark Faber. Mark is a familiar figure in Sun Lakes. He has extensive musical training and expertise. He's been in many musical productions in the Follies, That's Entertainment, the Chorale, and is a member of the Notables. Mark and his wife, Kathy, are certified regional trainers for NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Through workshops, they help families who are struggling to cope with mentally ill relatives. If you'd like to join the Chorale in the fall, be sure to let us know. We have several social events planned over the summer, and we'd love to include new members as our guests. For more information, contact Linda Vieira at 797-0315 or lvieira@eltree.com. Calling all men! Does the "Heart of your Heart" inspire you to sing? Do you long to call your sweetheart in song? If so, then you should check out the Sun Lakes Men's Barbershop Chorus. No prior singing experience necessary, just a willingness to listen, learn, and join in. We are a group of amateurs like yourself who enjoy singing and having fun. We meet every Wednesday morning at 9 am in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. For details, contact Harry Kaylor at 845-8054. Come join us! Barbershop Chorus
