18 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | JUNE 2017
By Judy and Jerry Moore, Residents
On April 1, 2017, we flew to Rome,
Italy for a 25 day odyssey that took us to
many historical, beautiful and fascinating
places. The 22-day cruise was on board
the Holland America Prinsendam, a small
boutique ship with a capacity of 835
guests. From Rome, we sailed to Naples,
Venice, Zadar and Dubrovnik, Croatia,
the beautiful Greek islands of Zakinthos,
Gythion, Patmos, Pylos, and to Iraklion,
Crete. After staying in Athens overnight,
we visited Valletta, Malta; and Trapani,
Sicily; followed by Cagliari, Sardinia. Our
last three days were spent in Barcelona,
Spain, one of our favorite cities.
This experience was so enjoyable
because each port was unique and
interesting, and we got to taste the local
foods in each location. We were surprised
by the beauty of the farms in Crete, Sicily
and Sardinia, and by the huge fortifications
in Malta. It was interesting that the Greek
islands were settled by different peoples
and each island has its own culture and
architecture. Our final days in Barcelona
were filled with sight-seeing, including
Gaudi's Familia Sagrada, Montjuic, La
Rambla Boulevard, Monserrat, and a Cava
(Spanish champagne) vineyard. Each
day was ended with wonderful tapas
meals and many bottles of Spanish wine.
This was truly an experience that we will
remember and treasure.
