48 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2017 Tennis Club I am not a good loser; a frequent one, but not a good one. Consequently, I am not going to write about the annual Red-Blue Team Tennis Tournament on July 4th, where the Red team was soundly defeated by the Blue team 104 games to 88. So, you will have to ask one of the Blue team players to tell you about their victory. Those players were team Captain Irve Sturner, Larry Martin, Howard Levine, Den Stevens, Hilario Luna, Paul Ko, Padoo Peralta, Perry White and Rick Loney. For an alternative set of facts, try asking one of the losers on the Red team captained by Howard Lyon, with team mates Chuck Beckham, Stan Lam, Dennis Gunnarson, Julie Stayner, Barb Miller, Loren DuChesne, Bernadette Martin, Syed Ali, and sore loser Steve Hovey. Maybe one of them will tell you that the men with the most wins were Howard Lyon and Perry White, who shared a team spot with Padoo, with 17 games. Padoo was the woman with the most wins with 17, which she shared with Perry. Runners-up at 15 wins apiece were Irve, Paul Hilario, and me, which is why I even bothered to mention the second place players. Another big event for The Tennis Club and all of Four Seasons Beaumont was the ribbon cutting and soft opening of The Courts, our beautiful new recreation center. Though there was still some work and inspections to get done on the facility, we got our preview look at the fabulous new clubhouse, pool and spa, putting green, meandering walkway through lush landscaping, and the tennis courts. There was also a ribbon cutting on Court One and entertainment by the rockin' Ambassadors to celebrate the new venue. Tennis players enjoyed a round-robin of play so that we could experience the different courts on the inaugural day. The timing was perfect, because the court colors are green and purple, the same as the traditional grand slam Wimbledon colors, also played in July. Though the play was all for celebration, fun, and bragging rights for being there for the opening day, Chuck Beckman ended the day with 18 wins, a lot more than the loser writing this. Meanwhile, Barb Miller is continuing to coordinate doubles play on the second and third Thursday of each month. Matches are scheduled for 6 and 7 pm, so contact her to get in some quick games in the evenings. ~ Steve Hovey Ping Pong Fun, fitness, friendship. Thank you to all the residents and guests who attended the ribbon-cutting event on Saturday, June 24 to preview Four Seasons' new Recreation Center, "The Courts," and who watched our table tennis exhibition tournament. It was so exciting playing in the new space, which enabled us to set up three ping pong tables, and with a ceiling high enough to allow for looping balls in flight. We used the exhibition tournament as our Fourth of July competition. Mixed doubles teams were randomly paired by drawing names, then teams were drawn to play two out of three game matches, and winners played off in finals. Results: first place - Gilbert Apodaca and Connie Patterson; second place - Lian Lee and Rony Tordesillas; third place - Jeannine Baker and Niles Sundstrom. We are looking forward to the opening of the courts and the increased availability of ping pong playing time for all! The ping pong room will be open during the opening hours of the facility, and since tables will already be set up, it will be easy for all residents and their guests to come in and play. Paddles and balls will be available for check out. However, Beware… ping pong has been known to become addictive and you may find yourself shopping for your own special paddle with custom rubber and blade! Club playing times will be every day except Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm, and special advanced play on Tuesdays from 2 to 4 pm. Club times are open for any players willing to rotate into games and play with other players in the room. Residents wishing to play on a private table with just their party should play during open play times before 10 am, after 3 pm, after 4 pm on Tuesdays, or all-day on Sundays. Stay tuned for upcoming tournaments, competitions and new player coaching times.
