FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2017 57 Tails & Trails - All Pets Tails and Trails is a new service group (working hand-in-paw with the Dog Owners Group) here in Four Seasons. We will be formalizing our charter and developing our mission on Aug. 16 at 3 pm in the RCN Board Room. This group will focus on keeping all pets in Four Seasons safe, well, and with their families. We are looking forward to sharing more in the coming months! Meanwhile, we thought we'd share these great tips with the community. Even modest summer heat is hard on our pets. Let's admit it, being out in the heat isn't pleasant for most humans, either. Let's get creative during the summer months. Our feline friends seem to enjoy more time indoors, so they don't suffer quite as much. But our canine friends? Well, they might get restless if they don't get enough exercise. Here are three great alternatives for your consideration: Day trips are amazing. An air-conditioned car and a short drive to a nearby resort area in the higher elevations might just help to fend off boredom. Big Bear, Idyllwild, Forest Falls and Oak Glen have much lower temperatures and all have dog-friendly attractions. Just be sure to take protection against fleas and ticks. Wild and wacky water can be fun. Who knew there is a doggie water park in nearby Murrietta? Our groups would love to plan a trip, so be sure to join us on Facebook to look for play date opportunities, like a group visit to a wonderfully-wet doggie paradise. Resist allowing your dog to swim in natural water sources; even creeks and streams can harbor toxic blue-green algae. Ingesting it could create serious health issues for your furry pal. Consider wetting your pup down with a light shower after walks. Since dogs don't sweat like we do, wetting them down can help maintain a healthy body temperature. Play with your dog indoors. Puzzle toys or hide-the-treat games give your pup mental and physical exercise as their curious noses work to find hidden treasures! An old-fashioned tug-of-war with a sturdy rope toy couldn't hurt, either. Depending on your dog, you'll both get a workout. When the weather is tolerable, be sure to join pack walks. Socializing with other dogs can really help keep them (and us) sharp and happy. See the D.O.G. article on the previous page for pack walk times.
