EXCURSIONS EXCURSION SIGN UPS: TUES., AUG. 1, 8 AM Del Mar Racetrack Thurs., Aug. 31, 10 am - 7:30 pm, $38 pp. Spend the day at Del Mar Racetrack, where Bing Crosby was there to greet the first fan through the gate as Del Mar opens, the famous Seabiscuit-Ligaroti match race was held on Aug. 12, 1938 and it drew 20,000 to the track and a nationwide radio audience. Also, a young rider out of Texas, William Lee Shoemaker, sets a Del Mar record of 52 wins, and his history and that of the track will become entwined thereafter.
