Iron Jawed Angels Social Singles is showing the acclaimed women's suffrage film, Iron Jawed Angels for all of Sun Lakes on Tues., Oct. 30, in the South Clubhouse at 9 am. There will be no charge for this film and we are furnishing coffee and donut holes. This is a wonderful film showing how we women fought and suffered so women could have the right to vote. Gives us food for thought when we vote in the upcoming election. Iron Jawed Angels is a 2004 American drama film starring Hilary Swank, Frances O'Connor, Julia Ormond and Angelica Huston. It focuses on the American women's suffrage movement during the 1910s that resulted in the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. The film received acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival. Much of the principal photography was done in Richmond, Virginia. The film follows political activists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns as they use peaceful and effective strategies. The film begins as Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O'Connor) return from England, where they participated in the women's suffrage movement. Once the pair becomes more active within the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), they begin to understand that their ideas were much too forceful for the established activists, particularly Carrie Chapman Catt (Angelica Huston). The pair leave NAWSA and found the National Women's Party (NWP), a better way to fight for women's rights. The unbelievable things they suffered to give women the right to vote should never be forgotten. social clubs & groups | october 2012 | 27
