Christian Burke from O'Connell Landscape Company was our guest speaker at our September meeting.
His topic was "Sustainable Landscape," a term that is gaining popularity (especially in California). The term refers to accepting the environment and uniqueness of your garden and then adopting the plants that will grow there with minimum modification and resource demands. For Four Seasons, this means high heat in summer, some freezing in winter, varying elevations within our community, adobe clay soils and wind.
For the gardener who likes the rewards of a real challenge, this is the place. For gardeners who like to plant and forget, there might
be a few disappointments. Knowledge of what will do well here is paramount. Ask established residents for their experiences. Have your soil assessed. Be water wise. Have patience. Reuse your green waste. This month summer ends according to the calendar but will linger into late October. The days will shorten and nights become cooler so reduce watering. Harvest seeds. Visit the garden shows and bring in the crops. This is a great time and place to be a gardener.
Our next meeting will be Oct. 3, 9 am. Info., Phyllis Beede, Captain (951) 769-4721 phyllis.beede@gmail.com. ~ Len Tavernetti
