SPORTS & ACTIVITIES Paddle Tennis Come and join us for fun and exercise. We have a small group of about 10 regular players but we have tons of fun. Regular play times are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 - 9 pm. We are also planning to play on weekends. Beginners are welcome. Info.: Alan, (951) 769-4202 or Jim, (951) 769-5525. Photo by Jim Cochran Racquet Club Over 20 members joined developmental coach Cheryl Smith for our last and final Play Day event under warm and sunny skies on Sept. 8. Plenty of hard core regulars as well as a number of faces we had not seen for a while. We welcomed two new members: Jean Serpas (who then promptly won two of the prize drawings!) and Garrett Warman, both of whom exhibited fine tennis skills. Welcome! Cheryl's drill spanned 100 plus minutes and emphasized hitting forehands and backhands from the 4 o'clock position, as well as racquet extension on volleys shoulder high to place the ball deeply and angled. She concluded with lobs and overheads and when to use these shots defensively and offensively as evolving play dictates. Jo Federchuk then had players draw cards to determine pairings for fun, social random play. This continued for 90 minutes before a hosted lunch and festivities in the Card Room. We enjoyed several different pizza styles, sides of green salad and fresh fruit plus drinks interspersed with prize giveaways and several drawings. Cheryl's absolutely awesome tennis trivia quiz (more like a final exam, 40 questions where the non-answers were funnier and more "spot- on" than the correct one) plus Irve's "MC" commentary bracketed by live TV coverage of the US Open Berdych/Murray semi-final battle. You can't pack in anymore tennis than that – a great culmination to the Play Day part of our 2012 year. Here are our major prize winners: Trivia Last Play Day of 2012 contest with 33 correct: Irve Sturner; 2009 Beaulieu Napa Cabernet: Louise Lyon; Private lesson with Cheryl: Alice Sturner; Personal business cards with FSBRC logo: Padoo Peralta; 50/50 Cash: Jean Serpas. Congratulations! On Oct., 16, we will have our Annual Meeting in the Lodge Ballroom. Dinner is provided for current members beginning at 6 pm, (guests, spouses welcome for $8). We will review the year just concluded including Play Days, the new storage area, website, by-law modification and ask for suggestions and input on what we can do better in 2013. You'll have a chance to re- up for the Inland Empire's biggest bargain, a 2013 membership for just $20! Mark the Oct. 16, on your calendar and we'll see you then. ~ Ken Elliott Social in the Card Room 38 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2012 Rick Loney hits an overhead while Terry Miller looks on.
