SPORTS & ACTIVITIES Hiking Club
From the mountains to the oceans, we are marching along. In August, we were on Mount San Jacinto and in September, in the surf at Crystal Cove State Park (photos inset). In October, we're going to Aspen Grove high in the San Gorgonio Mountains. Our yo-yo itinerary keeps us fit and trim and gives us great scenery for our exercise.
Crystal Cove was once a beach setting for Hollywood films. Footprints characterize Crystal Cove, especially the artifacts of early Hollywood movie making on the beach. While restoration is underway, the unattended cottages from the 1920s and 1930s hardly resemble Charlie Harper's beach house at the Boo. Our stroll in the surf is a reminder of why California is such a popular place and since it was after Labor Day, the weekday crowd was small. The Beachcomber restaurant provided the perfect seaside ambiance for lunch.
Aspen Grove at 7,500' is near the headwaters of the Santa Ana River. In October the leaves will be in full color. The trail borders the wilderness area overlooking Barton Flats. Join us on Oct. 10, for this hike. We meet in the Lodge parking lot at 8 am.
On Wed., Oct. 24, our hike will be to Devil's Slide in the San Jacinto Mountains. This trail starts at Devil's Slidebar Park and climbs up the mountain… a good workout.
