40 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | SEPTEMBER 2017 | Question: How important is water and how much water should I drink? Drinking water helps maintain the balance of body fluids. Your body is composed of about 60 percent of water. The functions of these body fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients and the maintenance of your body temperature To figure out how much water you should drink you need to multiply your weight by 2/3 (or 67 percent) to determine how water to drink daily. For example if you weigh 175 pounds you would multiply that by 2/3 to determine you should be drinking about 117 ounces of water every day. If you work out, you will want to adjust that number. You should add 12 ounces of water to your daily total for every 30 minutes. So if you work out 45 minutes daily, you would add 18 ounces of water to your daily intake. To the right is a chart that provides a guideline based on an individual's weight. Here are a few helpful tips to help you drink more water. 1. Buy a special container and set a goal of how many times you fill it each day and make sure you drink it all. 2. Water does not have to be boring so infuse your water with fresh fruit, herbs and other flavors. Try cucumbers, lemon and strawberries. 3. Eat foods that have a high water content such as cucumbers, watermelon, spinach, celery, bananas and skim milk.
