64 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2017 | Pickleball Club As this article is written our dear friend and Club member Richard Poulin is laboring with the Red Cross in Texas, assisting the victims of Hurricane Harvey. This is simply the latest relief effort Richard has been part of as an intrepid volunteer. We applaud your spirit of compassion-in-action, Richard! If our prayers are answered Richard will be safely home and Houston will be in full recovery mode by the issue of this Lifestyles. The next Club festivities are on track for Sat., Oct. 7 at the South Clubhouse. We look forward to another resounding success as our members are skilled partiers! Members, with our Paddle and Tennis friends, are enjoying the newly refurbished courts. We have handsome purple-and-green décor that is fresh and fashionable. Thanks to the PCM staff and contractors for a great job! Picklers enjoyed minimal disruption to our normal schedule of play thanks in large part to the friendly folks at Highland Springs Village who gave us opportunity to play while the work on our home courts was completed. Here are some timely reminders from Dave Weinbach, current national doubles champ: 1) pay attention to your grip. Too tight a grasp hinders the "feel" we need, especially for dinks. A lighter touch will produce a softer shot, just the ticket for dropping the ball safely in the kitchen. 2) Speaking of dinks, Dave suggests we concentrate on aiming the shot over the middle portion of the net. Pickleball nets are two inches lower in the center than the poles. While it's tempting to try to place a dink down the sideline, the net is more forgiving in the middle. This is in keeping with the champ's motto: "Respect the Net!" meaning, don't hit it there! Ever! Easier said than done, perhaps, but a good goal. With the crispness of autumn in the offing, Club members are invited to expand our play times to afternoons and evenings. Our official times remain 8 to 10 am Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. If you are interested in hooking up with others, either on our courts or our neighbors', give President Royce Newman or VP Nick Caputo a call: 769-1103 and 255-7841 respectively. See you on the courts!
