SLCC Golf & Pro Shop News • All golf carts are required to be registered with code enforcement. If you sell your cart make it a point to take off the number so the new owner does not have your number. • Also, if you play golf and do not check in at the golf shop prior to play or sign the after- hours sheet before play, you will receive a fine as well as a violation. • Demo Day is scheduled for Oct. 6, 9:30 am to 2 pm. By Al Vallecorsa, PGA Director of Golf Have you seen or played the new gold tees? No not "the tips" but the new "forward tees." The back tees are now Black. Recently the golf staff installed "forward tee markers" and the overall total yardage for the 18 holes is around 4500 yards. The course offers up a nice distance for one that just might not hit the tee ball like they once did. The gold tee markers are in the ground and located at the start of each fairway. For easy identification, we added a small yellow irrigation flag next to the markers. On holes #5 and #17 you need to play from the red tees, and on #8 and #13 play the most forward tee box. Tee up or drop a ball near the markers while not exceeding 2 club lengths. Can I post? Yes…. you can post in the computer, select "forward gold" tee box and put in your score. There has been some confusion as to how you handicap the forward tee when playing an event or if someone wants to play a match from separate tees. Please see the illustration below for clarification. Mike's handicap posted: White 20, Green 19, Gold 16 Steve's handicap posted: White 25, Green 24, Gold 20 The two want to play a match; Mike plays the white tees and Steve the new gold tees. How should you handicap it? Always in a match you stroke off the low ball. In this case you also have to include the course rating between tees, since in this case there are two sets of tees being used. The rating for the white is 68.9 and the gold forward tee's is 61.3 a difference of 7.6 and when rounding up it's 8 shots. So for the match to be equal Steve has to take 8 strokes off his gold handicap. Match would then play to Mike 20 and Steve 12 (20-8 for the rating). (NOT MIKE 20 from the white and STEVE 20 from the gold, see handicaps.) On the scorecard Mike would get 8 pops on the top 8 handicap holes and they are off. Let's say they change their mind before the match. Mike plays whites (68.9) Steve plays greens (67.4). 1.5 rounds up to 2. Mike's handicap on the white tees is 20, Steve green tees 22 (24-2 for the rating). (NOT MIKE 20 from the white and STEVE 24 from the green, see above handicaps). Most players assume you take your handicap from the number posted from the respective set of tees you are playing but what gets left out is the course rating. This needs to be calculated for the match to be fair and equal. This is the USGA's rule so any change to the rule is not playing by the rules of golf.
