By Micki Rosen, resident of Four Seasons Beaumont Did You Know? | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | OCTOBER 2017 | 37 DID YOU KNOW THAT OCT. 1 IS CD PLAYER DAY? Music collections have undergone some pretty severe changes throughout history, from vinyl to 8-track to cassette to CD to MP3 players and onto our phones. In its day, the compact disc was one of the most innovative data storage solutions ever created. The first CD player was produced by Sony in 1982 and ushered in a massive change in the public's consumption of audio. The original price of a CD player was around $2,200 and CDs cost $33-$45! Prices dropped drastically as technology improved. In 1985 the Dire Straits CD "Brothers in Arms" was the first CD to sell over a million copies. DID YOU KNOW THAT OCT. 29 IS INTERNET DAY? The first workable prototype of the Internet came in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET, or the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. The first Internet transmission was sent just months after Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. The technology continued to grow in the 1970s after scientists Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf developed Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol, or TCP/IP, a communications model that set standards for how data could be transmitted between multiple networks. ARPANET adopted TCP/IP in 1983 and from there researchers began to assemble the "network of networks" that became the modern Internet. The online world then took on a more recognizable form in 1990 when Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. DID YOU KNOW THAT OCT. 11 IS COMING OUT DAY? It all started at the dawn of time. World cultures everywhere have had LGBTQ people in their midst; in many cultures these people were openly accepted and embraced, and even thought of as sacred in some cultures. In the last couple hundred years the majority of the world's leading cultures began to villainize LGBTQ people, growing worse with every passing year. But in the last few decades that has begun to change. Courageous members of the LGBTQ community have fought and worked to help gain their rightful place in the world, with the ability to have a safe and normal life enjoying the same liberties as their neighbors. Coming Out Day was created by Rob Eichberg and Jean O'Leary as a result of the 500,000 person march on Washington D.C. for lesbian and gay rights in 1987. Encourage all the LGBTQ people in your life to stand proud! DID YOU KNOW THAT OCT. 9 IS BEER AND PIZZA DAY? Beer is the oldest alcoholic beverage known to man, and has occupied an important part of our culinary past as both a liquid food source and a safe way of imbibing water. With all the diseases that used to be found in water and no knowledge of where those illnesses came from, it's hardly surprising that beer was considered one of the safest drinks around. The ancient Egyptians included beer in every level of their food chain, and it was given to the slaves building the pyramids because it provided the calories and protein they needed to make it through their days of slave labor. Pizza heralds back to 997 AD in Gaeta, Italy though it didn't have any tomato sauce on it back then. Tomatoes didn't come to Europe until the discovery of the New World, and when Italians discovered tomatoes the first place they put them was on their beloved pizza! DID YOU KNOW THAT OCT. 4 IS VODKA DAY? Vodka Day is a great time to raise your glasses to one of the world's favorite alcoholic drinks. While vodka is often associated with Russia, and some of the finest and most expensive vodkas in the world come from Russia, vodka is produced in many countries and enjoyed all over the world. Vodka is the Slavic word for "little water" and is traditionally made by mixing water with distilled grains or potatoes, although today many popular brands add flavorings such as fruits and sugars. Aren't you thirsty for a martini, screwdriver or Bloody Mary? Today is a good day for it!
