The Antarctic Legacy of Sir Ernest Shackleton and Frank Hurley: Thousands of men replied to the ad, all seeking an opportunity to join the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, a complete on- foot crossing of the ice-bound continent. Among them, engineers, physicists, geologists and others went on the voyage and they had no clue what was in store for them… By mid-January, Shackleton and his crew managed to progress slowly through the ice flows. At times the crew took to the ice with picks, chisels and hammers to try and free a path ahead of the ship and break up the ice forming around the ship itself. Eventually, despite best efforts, by the end of January the Endurance was completely stuck in the ice and drifted in huge ice floes in the Weddell Sea. Shackleton and the crew were resigned to the fact they would be spending the Antarctic winter stuck in the ice with no hope of escape or rescue for at least nine months. See this incredible story unfold through descriptive text, film footage, artifacts, diaries and the lens of Frank Hurley's greatest ever photographic records of human survival, 100 years after the epic expedition! This exhibition was made possible by the Donald E. and Dorothy Kennedy Fund. You will arrive at the Bowers Museum where you will have free range to explore the many permanent exhibits on display. At approximately 11:30 am you will enjoy lunch (provide food choice at time of sign-up) in the "Tangata Restaurant" at the Bowers. At 12:30 pm you will take a docent tour of the Shackleton Expedition Exhibit. Menu includes ½ turkey and Swiss sandwich; ½ Albacore tuna sandwich; cup of soup (chef 's choice); coffee or iced tea.
