How to live to be100 Be a tortoise: An Aldabra giant tortoise named Adwaita died at the rumored age of 250 in March 2006. Be a woman: 85% of centenarians are women. Find a reason to laugh. Try retail therapy. A 2011 study found frequent shoppers live longer. The benefits hold up even if you don't buy anything. Don't dread getting older. According to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, adults who developed positive attitude about getting older lived more than 7 years longer than those with negative attitudes. Get a pet. Get busy and stay active. Working even part time is a good way to stay active. If you do retire, try volunteering. Win the genetic lottery. You can do everything right when it comes to future health and long life but about 1/3 of the factors that relate to longevity are in your genes. Use your brain and keep it active.
