60 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2017 Tennis Club Well, the pollsters weren't entirely correct, but what's new about that? The members of The Tennis Club's Committee elected at the Annual Meeting are Irve Sturner, Chuck Beckman, Bernadette Martin, Howard Lyon, and Steven Hovey. With that nice mix of new and veteran members, The Tennis Club is off to a great start for the 2018 season. Chuck Beckman has accepted the role of Treasurer, as he is also the organizer for the monthly Play Days. He has opened up with a restructured play pattern making good use of the available courts. As he has it set up, the first 16 players, whether club members or non- member players, draw numbers to determine who will start play together and on which of the four courts. He has even managed to match the numbered Penn balls to the particular court. That may seem a bit anal, but it helps when the balls get hit onto adjacent courts. The play proceeds with no-ad games for 20 minutes, with the team with more games won splitting up and moving to the next court. On that court, the losers of the previous match split up and team up with the new partners, hoping for a better outcome than the previous set. Chuck's arrangements were successful the first time out, and there was no waiting and little public grumbling. In fact, players even stayed around afterwards and shared pizza and beverages on the patio of the clubhouse. All in all, a beautiful day and a great start to the new year of The Tennis Club at Four Seasons Beaumont. It's almost worth being this old. Bernadette Martin has agreed to take on the role of planning the club's social activities, such as club sponsored luncheons and other tennis-centered activities. She will also coordinate the Thursday evening doubles play that Barbara Miller used to arrange. Howard Lyon will keep the records for the club and will maintain the membership roster and ball machine sign-ups and "owner" list. And I will continue to write this drivel, but don't blame me. In a democratic election, you get what you deserve. Special notice: In December the monthly Play Day will be the second Saturday of the month, in order to avoid the holiday weekends. In January, we will resume holding Play Days on the last Saturday of the month, beginning at 8:30 am. ~ Steve Hovey Serving up an ace with Smitty's pizza. Photo by Howard Levine
