mystery theater & more Don't you just love it when a plan comes together? This is just the case in developing the lineup for our 2013 blockbuster, "That's Entertainment." This has been in the planning stages for the past two months, but in just the last couple of weeks the emergence of the "wow" factor is now evident and becoming contagious. This is all because of club members' dedication to putting on the stage what they consider the best of the best in Sun Lakes. One thing will be certain… besides seeing your community favorites in blockbuster production numbers, is that this show, intermission and all, will be limited to just under two hours. That has proven to be the maximum comfort time limit for our Sun Lakes audiences and it is you that we always strive to please. Just take a moment to add Thurs., Feb. 28, through Sun., March 3, to your theater-going calendar. Those are the dates when the team of Jan Stapel and Gaylord Spence will bring the 2013 Edition of "That's Entertainment" to the Sun Lakes Ballroom stage. Auditions for our end of spring play (May 30, 31, June 1 and 2), which will be a comedy, will be held immediately following our Jan. 8, monthly business meeting. We have two proposed plays whose final selection will be determinant on the men's roles that can be cast for the most ambitious of the two. It seems that our best and brightest male actors are also some of the most involved people in the community. We need commitments for parts secured as early in the year as possible, with the understanding that rehearsals will start right after our "That's Entertainment" run. If you are new to Sun Lakes, one of the fabulous things we're sure you have discovered about our community are the choices one has in managing an active retirement. We are also hoping that, by now, you have seen one of our productions. If you think that what we do is appealing and something you'd like to try, we have a spot for you. Experience is not necessary; but we ALL have experience, a lifetime in fact. We'd just like you to share yours with us! Join us for our next monthly business meeting and introduce yourself. We'd like to get to know you! That meeting will be Tues., Nov. 6, at 1 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Info., Ginger Burris, 845-9685. barbershop chorus drama club We are entering the winter season with our Reader's Theatre production of "The Bickerson's," that classic radio serial starring Frances Langford and Don Ameche, on Nov. 14, at 7 pm. Four skits from the series are being performed by four different casts with four different directors. These were hysterical in the 1940s and 1950s and are just as hilarious today. The Reader's Theatre has been a great success for us and the South Clubhouse is sold out every time with returning aficionados who not only love the quick and lively shows but enjoy the wonderful spread of cheese and cracker platters and complimentary wine before the show. Doors open at 6 pm so that everyone can enjoy a social hour before the show. Our members take tickets and man the bar, supplying the theatergoers with their comestibles. Paid reservations will be available from Harriet Briant, telephone 769-0383. The cost is $6 per ticket and they go fast so don't put off calling Harriet for your seats. We will be taking a bus excursion to the Griffith Park Observatory to enjoy the exhibits, a wonderful Wolfgang Puck luncheon, and if you like, the Observatory Show. These excursions are always fun and if there are any seats left over the club opens the bus to outsiders. The price is always reasonable on a well maintained tour bus with complimentary bottled water for the quick trip into Hollywood. Our Spring production will be "Love, Loss and What I Wore" by Nora Ephron, the late great playwright. This play will be directed by Sallie Smelker and will star the original cast chosen two years ago before the play had to be postponed due to unexpected problems in getting the performance rights. All the problems have been worked out and we'll finally be able to see the talented performers strutting their stuff in this wonderful show. The Drama Club is always fun and busy with activities. The monthly dinners are well attended and the venues chosen for their good food and ambiance. Billy Reed's in Palm Springs has become a favorite with their superb service and great menu. Info., Rose Hermanson at 769-9810. Have you performed in: Glee Club? Chorus? Church? The shower? If you can carry a tune, come sing with us… we want YOU. Sing with us in chorus, small groups, or quartets in Barbershop Harmony. Previous singing experience is desirable but not necessary. Come and listen. Sing along if you feel like it – AND HAVE FUN doing it. Info., Harry Kaylor, 845-8054. Meet us Wednesdays at 9 am in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. social clubs & groups | november 2012 | 17
