William Paul Fredell was born on July 8, 1938 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Paul's life centered around Sunrise Church in Banning and he now resides in heaven as of November 10, 2017, age 79. When he was seven, his parents moved to Glendale, CA. In high school he loved playing the trombone and marched in two Rose Bowl Parades and performed at the Hollywood Bowl playing "76 Trombones" with Meredith Wilson conducting. He attended MIT in Boston and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. While at Berkeley, he married Lana and became a dad to two daughters and a son. He worked for Shell, Libby-Owens-Ford, and Georgia-Pacific. While working at Shell Oil, Paul isolated the catalyst used to lift rockets into space and to the moon. He loved to study military campaigns and strategies from the American Civil War as well as those from foreign conflicts. Unfortunately, he was blind in his left eye and was unable to serve his country in uniform. Paul participated in three military tours to WWII sites. Pacific Theater sites included Hawaii, Saipan, Tinian, Guam and Iwo Jima. He climbed Mount Suribachi. He loved classical music, and had a real love for the bagpipes, which was a part of his Scottish heritage. Passions included running his HO model steam locomotives and trains on a layout he designed and built in his garage and he was a very good photographer with a keen eye for setting up a picture. Paul had a sharp wit and was the master of pithy one-liners. Paul found love again when he married Carole and they traveled to 55 countries and all seven continents including a very special journey to Antarctica. At Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo, Paul fed red pandas and echidnas, took a walk with a cheetah, cuddled a koala and held an adult female Bengal tiger's tail. They moved into their condominium at Sun Lakes Country Club in 2010. Paul was an active member of the French, Computer and Genealogical Society clubs and participated in the longevity stick and chair yoga classes. A "gentle giant" at 6'5" he was always available to lend a helping hand to a neighbor. He is survived by wife Carole, children Heather and Andy, four granddaughters, three great-grandchildren and his cousin Bill Andrews. He was preceded in death by his parents and eldest daughter Virginia. 64 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JANUARY 2018 | Friends we will miss We want to remember your loved ones in the "Friends We Will Miss" section, above, but we need your help.
