22 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2018 | Golf Advisory Committee The Tee Box 'Fore' Sun Lakers. Frost delays are here! Before you head out to your tee time, check the daily course conditions on the website. Might save yourself some time and irritation. Some facts you should know about frost: 1. Any temperature near 40 degrees will produce some type of frost. 2. Frost is dependent on temperature, wind or the lack of it, humidity/moisture, and elevation. 3. Frost damage will not appear for a few days. When damage occurs the turf starts to look burned or gray. This is non recoverable damage and turf quality will diminish. 4. Frost delays are called by the golf course superintendent and enforced by the Pro Shop Staff. 5. No one likes a frost delay, so respect the staff for trying to protect your courses. For those of us wondering why we have a variety of grass colors here is the answer. Our fairways are basically dormant in the winter. We do not over seed, except tees and collar areas. As our temperatures drop, the Bermuda grass goes dormant which gives off a yellow/beige color. All will be well after the winter temperatures cease. By not over seeding fairways and rough areas, the Association saves $100,000. Our spring and summer conditions continue to improve each year we do not over seed. Storm drainage work on Holes 14, 15, & 16 of the Championship Course is a top priority in the new year. The Master Board, Golf Director, and Golf Superintendent continue to work on water issues and turf issues. Everything we want to do is expensive, so any decision made will come after careful research and will be in the best interest of the community. Hit 'em long and straight.
