FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2018 55 Paddle Tennis Paddle tennis — what the heck is that? That was my first thought as a new resident when I read the directional signs to the courts. I walked down to the courts to check them out, but nobody was playing. I chuckled to myself thinking that to me, a paddle was something mom and dad threatened to use on me when I misbehaved! I have played tennis for a couple of decades along with racquetball, but those sports were played years ago when this "ole" body was much younger. I hesitated thinking I didn't know anybody who played, and I probably would look foolish. I know that playing any sport helps to build neural connections that aid memory, learning and focusing skills — and I could sure use some of that neural growth! I reviewed the play schedule in the Breeze and showed up just to watch the game. NO WAY was the group going to let me be a spectator. I was warmly welcomed, offered a paddle, and encouraged to go ahead and just TRY the game. The scoring is like tennis, the court smaller, and the racquet - well, it's not a racquet but more like a ping pong paddle on steroids! The group was so supportive that first time, and continue to be such great teachers, competitors, and friends. For me, the shorter handle of the paddle has made it less stressful on my elbow joint, and the smaller court has made getting to the ball easier on the knees and legs. Lucky for me, nobody has tried to measure the neural growth. I'm still on a learning curve and would love to see more ladies come out and enjoy the fun, camaraderie and benefits of this great sport. ~ Lydia Ruckett
