By Theresa Rossetti, Resident Most of us sing along with songs we enjoyed "back in the day." We think we know the words by heart. But do we? I enjoyed the performance by Jonnie Fox and the Satinettes in January. I "helped" them along by singing with them. Then I was stopped dead in my singing tracks when they sang He's a Rebel. Turns out I have misunderstood a lyric or two (or more) for the last 55 years! The chorus contains the following lyrics: "'Cause he's not a rebel, no, no, no" "He's not a rebel, no, no, no, to me." Who knew? Obviously, not me. This got me thinking about how many other lyrics we've all gotten wrong over the years. After all, we didn't have the luxury of looking the words up on the Internet, nor did we have the clearer tones of hi-def stereo or fancy- dancy speakers. That transistor under the pillow was the best we had. Now, I'm not talking about misunderstanding the words to Louie, Louie or Wooly Bully. I'm not even talking about Mairzy Doats. No, I'm talking about such classics as: Hold Me Closer, Tony Danza, Sing Us A Song For The Yellow Man, Bald Headed Woman, Lucy's In A Fight With Linus, The Girl With Colitis Goes By, We Built This City On Sausage Rolls, Dancing Queen, Feel The Beat From The Tangerine, Kickin' Your Cat All Over The Place, We're Caught In A Trout, I'll Never Leave Your Pizza Burning, or one of my personal favorites, There's A Bathroom On The Right. One of my friends from college, a lovely, smart but just slightly ditsy girl, loved the song He Ain't Heavy, He's my Brother. She never could grasp why The Hollies sang "If he's leaning at all, he's leaning with sandals" though. I'm a big Neil Diamond fan. I've seen him in concert a few times, had almost, if not all, of his albums from the 60s and 70s. About 10 years ago I realized, through the magic of good speakers in my car, that he was singing "Forever in Blue Jeans," not "Reverend Blue Jeans." I blame a mix-up in my brain with Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show for that one. Yes, yes, I know they came out nine years apart, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it! By the way, if you're not 100% sure which songs have been mangled above, they are: Elton John's Tiny Dancer, Billy Joel's Piano Man, The Bee Gees' More Than a Woman, two from The Beatles' Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Starship's We Built This City on Rock and Roll, Abba's Dancing Queen, Queen's We Will Rock You, Elvis Presley's Suspicious Mind, The Stones' Beast of Burden and Creedence Clearwater's Bad Moon Rising. Extra points if you know the song used in the title of this piece. Let me know if you've got others. They all make me laugh. 10 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | MARCH 2018 Mangled, Tangled, Spangled and Spaghetti
