Is it just me, or does it seem as if we just finished taking down and storing away our Christmas holiday decorations? And now, the month of March is upon us! If you ever lived in a colder climate, the beginning of March, with the Spring equinox just three weeks away, may conjure up thoughts of warmer days. Here in the San Jacinto Valley, it seems that we can experience warm days during any month of the year! That was certainly the case during February this year for sure. Let's hope we get to experience some much needed rain before we launch into Spring. Before getting down to HOA related topics, we thought it would be fun to share some factoids about March. Some of these are well known and some perhaps not so much. Did you know that the name of the month dates back to Roman times when March was actually the first month on the Roman calendar? March is named after Mars, the Roman god of war, as it was the month in which the military campaigning season got under way after winter. It wasn't until the Gregorian calendar began to be used in 1752 that March moved to its current place as the third month of the year. March is currently associated with Women's History Month. But it's also American Red Cross Month and Fire Prevention Month. So, if you are a female firefighter who also volunteers with the American Red Cross… this is your month! Most notably, March is associated with St. Patrick's Day which is celebrated on the 17th each year in observance of the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. What originally began as a religious feast day in the 17th century has evolved into a variety of festivals across the globe celebrating Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, and a whole lot of green. It's the day we all get to be a little Irish, b 'gosh and b 'gora! As was mentioned in last month's message, our Annual Membership meeting will take place next month. And, it is also the time during which we hold our election for Board members. As a reminder, there are four Board member seats up for election, and any homeowner in good standing is eligible to submit a candidacy application. If you have a passion for leadership, and aspire to live the 60's cliché to "not be a part of the problem, but rather part of the solution," you are welcome to apply. But what exactly is leadership anyway? Such a simple question, yet defining it continues to vex people and even popular consultants. Kevin Kruse, a NY Times bestselling author, keynote speaker and entrepreneur defines leadership as more than a title. "Leadership has nothing to do with seniority or one's position in the hierarchy of a company. Leadership isn't an adjective. We don't need extroverted charismatic traits to practice leadership. And those with charisma don't automatically lead." Another definition is attributed to Warren Bennis, an organizational consultant and author who was widely regarded in the field of leadership studies. He simply says, "Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality." However, Kevin Kruse believes that this definition is incomplete because it is lacking "others." He prefers to define it as "a process of social influence which maximizes the efforts of others toward the achievement of a goal." We share the aforementioned concepts for you to ponder and arrive at your own definitions. But regardless of how you define it, we can all benefit from working together to achieve goals. Your Board of Directors, however it may be constituted after the election, is committed to its pursuit of developing a meaningful and worthwhile strategic plan for our Four Seasons community. Enjoy this month with friends and family, and may you be blessed with good health! | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | MARCH 2018 | 3 Message From the Board of Directors On behalf of your Board of Directors, Jim Hatcher, Ken Pounders, Tony Criscenti, Gene Hikel, Jim Crase, and Greg Rockvam, Russ Brown President
