Did You Know? FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2018 11 By Micki Rosen DID YOU KNOW THAT APRIL 6 IS CARAMEL POPCORN DAY? There is something about combining the buttery sugar goodness of caramel with the light airy nature of popcorn that just creates an amazing flavor combination you can't stop eating. Caramel popcorn's history goes back 150 years and came to pass during a period where there were a number of patents being granted in the US that all had to do with adding candy to popcorn. Eventually caramel corn found its way onto the midway and has been a staple of carnival and fair treats ever since. DID YOU KNOW THAT APRIL 8 IS ZOO LOVERS DAY? Zoo is short for zoological garden, and is mostly used to refer to the modern concept of a zoo. Prior to this the term "menagerie" was used; the oldest collection of this sort was found during an archeological dig in Egypt. The oldest modern style zoo was established in 1752 at the order of Emperor Francis I in Vienna, Austria. It was intended solely for the viewing pleasure of the imperial family, but was extended to the public in 1765. The next zoo to open was in 1775 in Madrid, and then another in Paris in 1795. Zoos became a symbol of a country's wealth, but have since become a bastion for some of the lost species of the world. DID YOU KNOW THAT APRIL 11 IS CHEESE FONDUE DAY? Fondue has been around as a concept for hundreds of years, but cheese fondue is generally recognized to have come into existence in 1875 when the original recipe was published. Before then there was a dish called "fondue" but it was more like a scramble, as there were eggs and sometime truffles mixed in. The early cheese fondues had an issue because the sauce was continually trying to separate, but right around 1905 cornstarch was introduced to Switzerland and that solved the problem. DID YOU KNOW THAT APRIL 21 IS AUCTIONEERS DAY? Auctioneering is one of the world's most ancient professions, having begun more than 2,000 years ago. The very first auction was held about 500 B.C. in Babylon. The late 17th century saw the establishment of the world's oldest, still-practicing auction house, Stockholm's Auktionsverk. America's first president, George Washington, was a big fan of scoring himself a hot deal via the mallet. Since the 1950s, the auction has expanded to include a plethora of financial institutions and marketplaces. These days, of course, there's eBay. DID YOU KNOW THAT APRIL 17 IS HAIKU POETRY DAY? Haiku poetry was originally found as the opening to another form of Japanese poetry called a Rengu. It took until the mid-1600s for Hokku, the form Haiku was found in at this time, to start appearing independently from its Rengu roots. In the late 1800s Hokku was renamed Haiku. The person responsible for bringing Haiku to the West was Hendrik Doeff of Denmark. As commissioner of trade in Nagasaki in the 19th century, he developed a love of the three-line, 17-syllable art form. It wasn't greatly received initially and took until the early and mid-1900s for English Haiku to appear. I wrote one for you: The Four Seasons life In Beaumont is wonderful; Enjoy it people!
