44 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2018 John Grisham compares Bryan Stevenson, an attorney and the author of Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, to Atticus Finch. Ironically, the case of Walter McMillan, which is detailed in this non-fiction book, occurred in Monroeville, Alabama, Harper Lee's hometown. An African American man, Walter McMillan was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of a white woman, even though he clearly could not have committed the crime. Stevenson has devoted his life's work to representing those, who, like McMillan, the justice system has not delivered justice. Just Mercy was named among the Best Books of the Year by the New York Times, the Washington Post, Time and others. It is also the recipient of many literary awards. Join us in the Lodge at 9:30 am on Tuesday, April 10 to discuss this moving memoir. Looking ahead, our May selection will be Camino Island by John Grisham. For more information about the Book Club, please telephone Doreen Sanders at (951) 769-1913. ~ Doreen Sanders Book Club Wine, sparkling juice, fruit and chocolate enticed about 25 people to attend the Writer's Club reception despite a cold night in February. Guests socialized and mingled and then enjoyed an interactive question and answer session with current Writer's Club members. Current club members first described their writing process, phobias and success followed by questions from the attendees. Topics included publishing, overcoming writer's block, working with an editor and marketing strategies. A representative from Victory Publishing attended the reception discussing general publishing concerns. The club members also celebrated their publishing success. Four out of the five members in attendance have published in the last year. The fifth member is finalizing his book and getting ready to submit for publishing. Another member who was not in attendance also has published. The reception was conducted to generate interest of the newer members of our community and to determine if changing the meeting time to early evening would encourage them to attend. Several good ideas will be evaluated at the next regular Writer's Club meeting. The club currently meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 1:30 pm in whatever room is available. April's meeting will be on the 10th. We encourage you to join us if you are just merely curious whether you write poetry, lists or custom birthday cards, the Writer's Club is for you. ~ Karla Noonan Writer's Club
