54 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2018 January and February were busy months for our pickleball group. Many of us participated in the Loma Linda Pickleball Tournament in January. It was a fun event and we had several of us medal. Janelle Von Kleist won gold and Gracy Luna won silver in the woman's round-robin event. Richard Carrasco won gold in the men's round- robin event. We are so proud of their victories! In February, many of us played in the Palm Desert Senior Games. This tournament is very tough with serious competition from other picklers all over the country and snow birds too! None of us received a medal, but several made it to higher brackets. Good experience and fun for all. Thanks to those family members and other team mates that came and cheered for our players. Of course the lunch out afterwards is always a good time. We continue to have growing numbers as more people at Four Seasons discover this fantastic sport. We play every morning from 7 am. Also, for new players, we have drills and basic instruction on Tuesdays at 9 am and Thursday nights at 4 pm. If you have any concerns or questions please contact Nancy Barnaby at (951) 845-0842 or rbarnaby38@verizon.net. Here are some tips to think about when playing! When serving: Get up to line, decide on your serve, relax, then serve! Never talk and never hurry! Hitting and moving: Do not rush and run through your shot to get to the kitchen line. STOP hit and move up as you can. Ball coming: STOP get yourself set up and in position to strike the ball. Always strike the ball in front of you or beside you-never behind you. Stand at kitchen line and think: Give me the ball! Give me the ball! This way you will always be ready - look for the ball every time. You have to want that ball every shot. Happy pickling! ~ Marty Key Pickleball Paddle Tennis I came to live at Four Seasons full time in 2010 and the first activity that attracted me was Table Tennis. It was there that I was invited to play the game of Paddle Tennis. I didn't know anything about it, had never handled a tennis racket… but I tried and was hooked. I can see the advantage the tennis players have, so it has been a slow process. I'm doing a lot better now and join other beginners on Tuesdays at 11 am. It's fun and we invite anyone new to Four Seasons to join us. ~ Paco Paez Some new players may be confused by our play style. Sometimes we play a set, sometimes one game. Sometimes we rotate one player in, but other times we bring in two. Over the years that we have been playing, we have developed some guidelines that insure all players get equal play time regardless of level of play. It is no fun to be sitting on the bench while other players play multiple games. So the following guidelines ("rules") have been approved by the Paddle Tennis Committee: These are based on how many players are present and available to play at any given time. This may change at any time new players arrive or players leave. Four players present: Play one set (first team to win three games); Change teams until each combination of players have played together Five players present: Play only one game, then rotate a player in from the bench. Six players present: Play two in two out, winning team remains until they win three games in a row then the next team can request the players to split or they can challenge the current winners. It is up to the new team coming in to decide. Seven players present: Same as with 6, but incoming team should include the player sitting the longest on the bench. Eight players present: Same as four players present, just use two courts. The two winning teams then play each other. The "second place teams, play each other. After, two sets, mix up the teams. A set is first team to win three games. Nine players present: Play only one game, rotate extra player in between the two courts. 10 players present: Same as 6 players, two in and two out using both courts. 11 players or more: Same as 9 players. Play only one game, rotate extra player in between two courts. Player sitting longest on the bench rotates in first. ~ Diana Ali Pickleball players had fun at the Loma Linda Pickleball Tournament in January Gold medalist Janelle Von Kleist Meet Paco, an excellent FS Paddle Tennis Player
