| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2018 | 69 Elmer F. Pfonner With great sadness the family of Elmer F. Pfonner announce his February 17, 2018 passing. At age 84, surrounded by family and dear friends, he was overcome by a brief undiagnosed illness. He was born April 12, 1933 in Tonawanda, NY to Elmer G. and Frances "Kitty" (Harris) Pfonner. Elmer was a graduate of Kenmore High School in Buffalo, NY. He prematurely entered the Marine Corp in 1950 serving three years and is a Korean war combat veteran. Married February 18, 1956 to Iona (Parker) Pfonner who preceded him in death after 57 years of a beautiful marriage together. Elmer and Iona moved their family to California in 1960. Elmer was a Freemason, Past Master, Golden Veteran Award recipient for 50 years of service and recently awarded the Hiram Award, the highest honor bestowed on a Mason by his Blue Lodge. He is a founding member of the Semper Fi Honor Guard for Riverside National Cemetery. He loved swimming every morning with his friends at Sun Lakes and being the greatest Santa Claus to hundreds of children. He was such an amazing man - loving, funny, plain spoken, genuine, heart connected, loved the Lord, and his country. A staunch Republican, with the greatest laugh that we will always remember. Elmer will forever be loved by those he preceded in death, his children, Dorothy Serna, Dwight Pfonner (Raquel), Dawn Anthony (Matthew), Diane Schaller (Chris), John Pfonner (Jessica) and his grandchildren Jennifer Wood, Greg Pfonner, Stephanie Rea, Justin Anthony, Jared Anthony, Allison Frith-Smith, Koby Pfonner, Devon Schaller, Jackson Schaller, his great-grandchildren, Kyle, Emma, Sara, Hunter, Thomas, and his dear friend Carol Piercy. Fred Warner 92 years old and a 26 year resident of Sun Lakes, passed away peacefully after a sudden illness on February 11, 2018. He was surrounded by his loved ones and listening to his favorite Frank Sinatra songs. Fred was born in Los Angeles, on April 29, 1925, to Elenora and Fred Peruccio. He was a star athlete at Van Nuys High School, where he met Carol, the love his life and wife of 73 years. During WWII, Fred lied about his age and joined the Navy, spending two years on Guadalcanal, earning several medals including the Purple Heart. Upon returning, Fred joined the LAPD and eventually became Chief and Port Warden of the Port of Los Angeles Police Department. Upon retiring in 1992, Fred and Carol moved to Sun Lakes where they were both very active in the community. Fred was a member of the Art League, International Culture Club, Big Band Dance Club, Executive Golf Club, and a regular participant of the Sun Lakes Follies, where he sang every year and emceed many times. He was an award winning painter and photographer, and generous contributor to many charitable organizations. He was also a member of the Banning Police Commission, the Elks, the Rotary and American Legion. On a personal note, Fred was proud of a number of things including his service to country, his devotion to law enforcement, his Italian heritage, his wife, Carol and his four daughters, Robin, Kellie and Shannon (he was sadly pre-deceased by his beloved daughter, Terry), his 12 grandchildren and 7 great- grandchildren. Those who knew him well will miss the hand-made chocolate candies he packaged lovingly and gave out at Christmastime, and his renowned driveway cocktail hours. He was much loved and will be sorely missed. Fred was laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery with full military and police honors in a ceremony attended by 25 uniformed police officers from LAPD, Port of Los Angeles Police and Torrance Police Department. Mary L Malland a beautiful and dedicated servant of the Lord has entered the kingdom of her Lord and Savior. Mary passed away at age 79, January 25, 2018 at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning where she served as a Certified Hospital Chaplain for 14 years. Mary was a 14-year resident of Sun Lakes. Mary had a career in Human Resources and after her retirement she dedicated herself to volunteer service as a Pastoral Caregiver at Redlands Community Hospital and then as a Hospital Chaplain. She had many years of study and service at Banning United Methodist Church and attended Community Bible Study for many years. Mary and her husband Merle were married on January 12, 2001 and had an immediate blended family with 10 offspring. She loved every one of them and was so proud of them and her 19 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mary is survived by her husband Merle, son David Reschke, daughter Michelle Schubert, daughter Geri Bagley, daughter Rina Perez, and daughter Tina Wingo [Mark] and her brother, Paul (Agnes). Mary was loved and embraced by her extended family, all in the state of Washington. Son Mark Malland (Kim), son Tim Malland (Michie), son Scott Malland (deceased), son Chris Malland and daughter Kari Sullivan (Tim). William (Guy) Swope passed away February 16, 2018 at the age of 76. He was born May 10, 1941 in San Bernardino to Lois Jeannette Willis and Joseph Donald Swope. He grew up in Oceanside, and the San Fernando Valley. After his marriage to Eileen in 1982 they lived in Santa Clarita for many years. Guy graduated from Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley, CA in 1959 and joined the United States Marine Corp where he served from 1959 to 1963. He was honorably discharged as Lance Corporal. His working career was always in sales, mainly with Arrowhead Water and Sparkletts Water companies. During his time with Arrowhead he earned various sales awards in the 70s and 80s . He retired in 2011 from Sparkletts Water where he was a successful sales rep and respected sales trainer. Guy and his wife Eileen moved to Sun Lakes in July 2011 to begin retirement playing golf and socializing with many dear friends they have met. He also spent mornings at Donut Delite with friends discussing sports and current issues. Guy loved his family, friends, new cars, sports and his country. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Eileen, daughters Shelly (Eddie) Villalobos of Santa Clarita, Sandee (Ron) Foose and granddaughter Megan Ellingson of Arizona. He is also survived by brothers Stanley (Madeline) Swope of Camarillo and Donald (Geri) Swope of Torrance and sister Nancy (Pete) Melville of Santa Clarita, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Guy will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
