Did You Know? FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2018 11 By Micki Rosen DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 27 IS CELLOPHANE TAPE DAY? Cellophane tape was invented in the 1930s with the purpose of putting a seal on an amazing new substance called cellophane. By the way, cellophane is not plastic; it's made from processed cellulose, just like paper! The first brand of cellophane tape was developed by Richard Drew. It was called "Scotch" tape and now bears a very recognizable trademark red, black and green tartan pattern. The term came about when a body shop painter who was testing one of the first tapes announced in frustration "Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!" The word "Scotch" at the time was slang for "stingy." DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 2 IS WORLD PLAY YOUR UKULELE DAY? The ukulele is arguably the most iconic sound from Hawaii, which is where it got its start. The name ukulele means "jumping flea." The ukulele came into existence sometime in the 1800s; it was of Portuguese origin and was known in those days as the "machete." The instrument played a central role in helping to revitalize Canada's music programs, as it was an inexpensive way to introduce students to music. The Doane program, named after its creator J. Chalmers Doane, taught nearly 50,000 children to love and play the ukulele. DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 10 IS WINDMILL DAY? Heron of Alexandria was the earliest person known to have harnessed the energy of moving air to perform work, using a very primitive device to power an organ. Persia developed more traditional windmills. Some historians think that the Persian models were the inspiration for the vertical models that were developed in the middle ages. The first evidence of a windmill can be found in Weedley, Yorkshire, England and is said to have been built in 1185. They were used primarily to grind grain, and did so for many centuries thereafter. Nowadays, windmills are harnessing wind to generate clean, unlimited renewable energy – they are working to save the environment! DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 22 IS SHERLOCK HOLMES DAY? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes' stories, said the character was originally inspired by Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, for whom Doyle had worked as an assistant. Like Holmes, Bell was famous for his ability to draw broad conclusions from minute observations. Francis "Tanky" Smith, a policeman and master of disguise who was Leicester's first private detective, is also thought to have influenced the character. Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes story first appeared in print in 1887 and continued to be published for the next 40 years, until shortly before the author's death. DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 25 IS WINE DAY? Unlike "Drink Wine Day" which is in February, Wine Day is more about celebrating the beverage itself rather than the act of drinking it. The oldest evidence of wine that exists dates back to 7000 BC China. Many ancient civilizations celebrated the effects of wine and often used it for religious observance. Today, wine is one of the most widely produced and consumed drinks in the world. Chardonnay, Merlot, Riesling, Syrah – there are so many types to choose from. So open a bottle of your favorite and celebrate Wine Day in style.
