FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2018 45 "Will The Real Jan Please Stand Up?" There are so many interesting people living in Four Seasons. I recently met Jan White at the Writers Club meeting and had the pleasure of sitting with her and talking to her about her life and writings. Jan has been a resident of Four Seasons for seven years and what she likes most about her community is the people. Jan started and taught the first Spanish classes and was a participant in a K. Hovnanian "promo" filmed for Four Seasons. She was in the last fashion show, was emcee for the Motown Production, produced by Willa Harris, and is a member of the Bid Whist Club. Jan was born in Los Angeles. She is a retired legal secretary, educator, and has been a writer for over 40 years. Jan believes that the essence of her personality is to, "Laugh when you can, apologize when you should, and let go of what you can't change. Hug warmly, forgive quickly, play hard, take chances, give everything and have no regrets. Life is too short to be anything but happy!" Jan has written enough to fill books. The essay I thought was most interesting is titled, "Identifying Allies," where she writes about being independent and the challenges of selecting, gathering and soliciting help from allies. She asks questions like, "Are allies a personal resource that all well-rounded individuals utilize as a matter of course? And is my desire to operate as an independent a strength or frailty? Can you do the hokey-pokey and turn yourself around or, is that what friends are for?" I think having allies helps to get to know your inner being. And knowing your inner self is to know your purpose in life. To learn more about Jan or read her selection of essays, you'll need to ask Jan. In the meantime, everyone has a story; and we live in a community with so many people who are filled with wonderful stories, gifts and talents. But how many of us are willing to share our stories? Something to think about… Announcement(s): The AACC will be holding its annual Juneteenth Celebration on Tuesday, June 19 at 4 pm. Reservations are required. For more information, please contact Joyce Allen at (951) 769-4354 or Roxie Elliott at (951) 769-2517. The club meets the first Monday of the month in the Lodge Card Room at 6 pm. ~ Regina Thomas African American Cultural Club Jan White
