54 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2018 Well, the weather is getting gorgeous. Time to break out those shorts and skirts and embrace our beautiful spring. It is always nicer to play on a warm day with no wind. Many of our players are preparing for the next Loma Linda Tournament in May. They are working with their selected partners to improve as a team with lots of fun, helpful hints and practice. We are working on a new logo and shirts to wear to tournaments and home play. We will keep you posted as more decisions are made. Please keep kids with skateboards, rolling toys, skates, scooters and all things with wheels off the courts. We came back after Easter and found our brand new courts all marked up by some wheeled toy. Thank you in advance for your understanding. Another note: we play the game of pickleball with a paddle — just like paddle tennis and ping pong. I have noticed so many players calling our paddles rackets. Even my snow bird Canadians do it. So try and focus on saying paddle, not racket, or we may have to paddle you with our paddles. Got it? Also, another point from tennis: if the ball goes past you to your partner, try to look if you can to help call it long or short. I know this is impossible for all shots but when your partner is focused on the ball you can help by watching where it lands. More helpful hints when playing: Slow the ball down! Pickleball is not meant to be a slammer jammer game. It is a skilled combination of soft and hard shots. Use lobs and dinks to slow the game down. Don't be afraid of the kitchen. You are not allowed to hit a volley if in the kitchen or on the kitchen line. You can stay in the kitchen whenever you want as long as you don't hit a volley. You and your partner can stand in the kitchen together, but you can't hit the ball unless it bounces. Tips for a better doubles team - have fun! It makes you relaxed and you will make fewer errors and better shots. Visually fill in the holes on the other court and hit to fill in the holes. Always move with your partner by going up together, going back together and side to side. Create a wall for the other team. Do not give them holes to aim for. Remember we play every morning at 7 am. Also, we have drills and new player instruction on Tuesdays at 9 am and Thursday evenings at 4 pm. Questions or concerns contact Nancy Barnaby at (951)845 0842 or email rbarnaby38@verizon.net.
