8 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2018 By Barney Rubble "Oh no! Honey, do you believe it? Another article about emergency preparedness. Another one. Everywhere we look. Everything we read. Emergency. Tragedy. Fire. Flood. Mudslides. Earthquake. Toxic fumes. Accidents. I can't stand it. "It's peaceful here. Look around. The mountains, the sky, the clouds. The trees. Listen. The birds. A frog. The quiet. It is so beautiful. It's our oasis. Our retreat. Our sanctuary. "We're retired. We're getting old…er. We've lived this long without disaster. I am so sick of all of these articles telling us we need to do all of these things, spend all of this money, take all of this time, figure out all of this stuff. We're fine as we are. We've got some water bottles in the pantry and in the garage and our water heater is full of water we can use. We've got extra canned goods. And we keep our cell phones charged so we can call the kids if anything happens. We're just fine. "I really do not understand why our Breeze has to start harping, too. Look here, honey, I've got all of the 2018 issues right here. In January the Emergency Preparedness Committee announced that Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training would be given in our Lodge. "You can't read over my shoulder? Why don't you go online to fourseasonsbeaumont.org and look there? All of the Sentinels and Breezes are there. OK? Now you can be as irritated as I am with all of this… this… junk they're spouting. "So here we go. Back to January when the Safety Committee reported they'd gotten approval for 911 phone and AED installation at the Courts and the Summit. And they're going to have AED training. "I've heard that AEDs are self-explanatory, so why do we need training? Although I suppose that if someone collapsed in front of me, it might be nice to have some idea already of what to do so I'd feel more confident. So maybe we oughta go when they hold another training. OK, hon? "Here's the February copy. Page 16. Talks about keeping prescriptions up to date. Boy, they could be talking about us. I was looking for an antiseptic the other day and found a tube of ointment that expired in 2015. Good grief. I'm afraid to dig into the rest of those bottles and tubes and sprays. Probably find a prescription quilled on parchment. "Although I suppose it wouldn't take too much time and effort to go through our stuff. I could sort and you could write down names and dates and whatever. And while we're at it, we oughta look in our safe. We're going to need the pink slip when we turn in your car. I hope that slip is in there. And all of our insurance documents. Did we ever get them off of our desk and into the safe? Oh brother, I bet the safe contents are not in much better shape than the medicine cabinet contents. "But this is easy stuff. What I get so sick of is the incessant gloom and doom we're subjected to all the time. The Big One. There've been quite a few little shakes over the past few years and no one's gotten hurt, or had their house collapse or anything. So why carry on and Yo-Yo… It's Not A Game Anymore
