22 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2018 | Library Committee Spring has sprung at Sun Lakes (summer is just around the corner!) Many Sun Lakers are gearing up for travel season – you'll want to tell friends that you visit about the new books you've read. Let your imagination wander as you start your list for summer reading! Please check out our expanded selection of audio books. From the activity we've gotten on Wednesday afternoons in the Main Clubhouse lobby (for checking out audio books) we know there is great interest in these titles. Over 350 titles now! The glass- front cabinet in the paperback library is where they are stored. You can peruse our current inventory there, as well as on the Library Committee section of the Sun Lakes website. The Library Committee is actively reviewing what books are most requested so we can respond to your needs. How do the Sun Lakes libraries work? We always have new residents so let's review this great benefit of Sun Lakes life: There are four libraries. For newbies, please help yourself to a library bookmark which summarizes the sections in each one. The beautiful main library/reading room in Main Clubhouse is for hard back books. Markers on the shelves indicate book type (for example, "Romance"). Books are arranged alphabetically by author. Across the hall is the paperback library, again with books separated in sections. Large print books are also in this room and include hard back and softback. A new section for large print is "New York Times Bestsellers." All Westerns are also here. For grandparents there is a section of children's books. South Clubhouse library is all paperbacks: romance on one side, mystery on the other. Reader's Digest condensed large print books are here as well. The Library Committee would like to thank the Garden Club and Evelyn Hawkins for donating these Reader's Digest books for all Sun Lakers to enjoy! North Clubhouse has a large section for paperbacks but also has some specialty sections not found at the other libraries. There is a section for sports books. There are some classics also. Biographies (please note: in this section only, books are arranged alphabetically by the subject's name) and non-fiction (by author). You will find a selection of jigsaw puzzles. New to North Clubhouse library are paperback Westerns. Except for audio books, this is the Honor System. Borrow and return books at your leisure. I go to all four libraries when I am looking for a particular book. The Library Committee will be holding our next book sale on July 4, from 9 am to 2 pm in the Main Clubhouse. That is a fun, busy day at Sun Lakes and activities start early. As always, hard cover books and DVDs will be in the main library room. Paperbacks will be on two tables set up just outside the doors on the veranda. Prices are low and we love to make deals so please stop by and take a look. Have a happy May! We're in our third month of inspecting, measuring, and documenting the cracks in the community sidewalks. So far, we've found 3,249 cracks that are over one inch long. The longest so far is 146 inches! This one alarmed us and we contacted the USGA and the California Quake Society as we suspect this may be an undiscovered fault. We are in need of more committee members. It's a lot of fun and you will enjoy wearing the specially designed hats made out of newspaper and twine. The group meets at the Main Clubhouse at 8 am and each person is assigned a "Crack Buddy" and a designated area to inspect. When you find a crack in the sidewalk, one person is to yell loudly and in a clear voice, "Crack Crack, Don't Be A Jack!" and the other person twirls thrice while blowing an airhorn, alerting those in the vicinity to the discovery. The crack is then measured for length and girth, inspected for plant growth and noted in the Crack Journal. We are currently working on an app that can be used by every resident in Four Seasons so they can find, photograph and document sidewalk cracks as they find them. ~ Stacey Parr Sidewalk Crack Committee
