30 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2018 | Most of us never give a second thought to how old a song is unless the song brings back a memory of when you first heard it. This happened to me one day when I was at church, and we all sang a song from the hymnal. It was Morning Has Broken. I had first heard this song on the radio in the 70s by Cat Stevens. I was really surprised to find out the year of this song was listed in the hymnal as 1931 and lyrics by Eleanor Farjeon. There have been many other songs that became popular again many years after the song was first published. Another example of a hit song with the surprise factor of when it was written was Love Me Tender by Elvis. Elvis had a hit song and a movie with the same name. This song was an old civil war song from 1861 under the name Aura Lee. Here's a short list of songs that made a huge leap forward long after they were first written and released. Puttin' On The Ritz by Taco - 1983; written by Irving Berlin 1927 Sukiyaki by Kyu Sakamoto - 1963; first released in England in 1936 and sung by minstrel chorus. The Entertainer, 1974 by Marvin Hamlisch; written by Scott Joplin 1902 Shaving Cream by Benny Bell, 1975; Benny Bell, 1948 Oh Holy Night by Luciano Pavaroti 1975; written by Placide Cappeau 1847 Blue by LeAnn Rimes, 1996; written by Bill Mack, 1958 Till The End Of Time 1945, by Perry Como; written by Frédéric Chopin's Polonaise in A flat major, Op. 53, the "Polonaise héroique" 1842. Dream A Little Dream Of Me 1968 By Mama Cass Elliott; written in 1931 by Gus Kahn. O Little Town Of Bethlehem by Andy Williams 1962; written 1868 by Phillip Brooks. What'll I Do by Frank Sinatra 1947; written by Irving Berlin 1923. Whether a song is more current, or an old standard, you may be surprised to find the Karaoke version of it at Sun Lakes own Good Times Karaoke, featuring Rosie Ingalls, Barb Miller & D.J. Blast. Finding that song you have always wanted to sing is an experience you should try at least once. In May you can join Barb, Rosie and D.J.
