32 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2018 | Yiddish Culture Club DNA TESTING: DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE? Of course you do - BUT - do you really know such details as where in this world your family came from? What were their real origins? Not just the tales our grandparents told - like Mars - or "The milkman left you on the back porch." If you are familiar with the commercial of the gentleman who thought he was originally German and wore lederhosen and danced in a German dance group until he had his DNA tested and found out he was mostly Irish and Scots and now wears a kilt, you can also be amazed at what you may learn about your genealogy; you might even find you have an uncle George! Although many of us have looked into our family's history there is another, even more sure way of finding out about ourselves. On Wed., May 9, at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom we present Mike Stangel, General Manager of Geni.com, a part of the MyHeritage family. Mike holds a Master of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, and has been developing software for a variety of applications since 1993. He joined Geni in 2006 and has filled several roles within the company including Senior Software Engineer and VP of Engineering. He enjoys Geni's mission to build a single family tree of the world, as well as interacting with enthusiasts around the globe who are working toward that goal. Mike's program will include a surprise genealogical commercial made by someone we know, as well as such topics as a brief history of Genealogy, Why DNA, which test to take, and much more. A question and answer session will be included with the presentation. Everyone is welcome. There is no charge to YCC members but there will be a $3 charge for non-members attending this meeting. As usual coffee and cake will be served. We are looking forward to this most interesting and unusual meeting with a speaker who knows where he comes from! Don't miss the Friendship Club's show on Sun., May 20, "The Piano Man with Jim Witter," starring an award-winning Canadian country and Christian music singer/songwriter. Witter grew up playing music. While still in high school, he honed his musical talents by playing evenings at a piano bar and restaurant. One of Witter's demos caught the attention of a Sony Music Canada executive. Within three years, he released his first album. Every single on the album reached the top 10 on the Canadian country singles chart. In his hit-filled, multi-media concert, Witter brings his powerful voice and infectious personality to the stage, sharing the songs and stories behind the music of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Witter and his incredible band will faithfully re-create some of the Beatles' greatest hits including Hard Day's Night, Nowhere Man, Help, Hey Jude, Let it Be and countless others. Audiences will learn interesting facts about how some of these songs came to be, and what inspired Lennon and McCartney to write some of the most memorable music of our time. Witter's music and songwriting have earned him multiple awards and nominations from the Canadian Country Music Association, the Juno Awards, and the Dove Awards, where one of his albums was nominated for Inspirational Album of the Year. Tickets are $20 for members, $25 for non-resident guests. Doors open at 6 pm, show begins at 7 pm. Make checks out to Friendship Club, and deliver them to 5168 Rio Bravo Drive. For cancellations and information, call Pat at 845-3789 or Judy at 797-0265. A delicious buffet dinner is available in the restaurant for show-goers by reservation only, beginning at 4:30 pm.
