| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2018 | 61 Pickleball Club This winter saw a partnership forged between the National Pickleball Organization and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. As our tennis friends know well, the Garden is a world-class facility and a magnet for the greatest players. Its 16,000+ seat stadium and adjacent Stadium 2 make it the second-largest tennis venue in the world. And now, thanks to the USA Pickleball Association's multi- year agreement with Indian Wells, our sport will have a home there as well. The national tournament this year will be held on the new pickleball courts there Nov. 3 - 11. The Garden isn't restriping tennis courts but adding pickleball to its campus. This merger highlights the growing bond between two great sports and promises even more linkages in the future. More evidence of the unity between tennis and pickle came as two of the venerable stars of tennis, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, formed teams of champion pickleball players and staged a lucrative fundraiser benefiting their charity foundations. The inaugural match was held in Austin and raised over $30,000. If you are looking for an upscale getaway where pickleball is offered in a beautiful resort setting, try the Marriott Desert Ridge in Phoenix. The complex has embraced pickleball in a big way, converting three tennis courts into a dozen lighted, professional- caliber small courts. They cater to our players, offering all the amenities reserved for the athletes who enjoy the other sports facilities there. Here are some tips from the pros: The average pickleball point consists of nine hits (if your points don't last that long, consider the benefits of patience!). The eyes have it! Keep 'em on the ball for however many or few shots you and your opponents make. Also watch your feet. If you look down and can see your shoelaces, you aren't in position. Leaning forward with knees above your feet will put you in a good "athletic position." Lose your grip! Save the death-grip for blocks at the net. Otherwise, the looser the better. In fact, keep a loose grip until you are ready to strike the ball and then loosen it some more! And lastly, remember the ball is not your pet dog. It will not come to you! We can expect a little more mild weather as spring proceeds so come on out and play! If you are new to Sun Lakes and/or to pickle, give our officers a call about beginners' clinics. You may reach Royce Newman, our president, at 769-1103 and VP, Nick Caputo, at 255- 7841. Regular club play is Monday/Wednesday/Saturday at 8 am. See you on the courts!
