I have my books from the library and I am sitting out by the pool – two favorite activities! Mark July 4 on your calendar not only for great Sun Lakes festivities like golf cart parade and BBQ, but also for the Library Committee's second book sale of the year. We will see you from 9 am to 2 pm in the hardcover library and on the Veranda! We don't think of taxes and budgets in these great summer months, but consider that on June 5, two great English economists were born. Some of you (me too!) had those economics classes in college so this will tickle a part of your brain from "those old days." Adam Smith (1723-1790), a Scottish economist but "economist" wasn't a descriptor in his time so we will call him a moral philosopher (systematizing/recommending concepts of right and wrong, normal values for society, obligation or permission for a person in specific situations) and student of political economy (production and trade for an area, state, or country, distribution of wealth). He studied at Glasgow University where he developed his passion for liberty, reason, and free speech and then was sent to Oxford via scholarship. Earning a professorship at Glasgow University in 1751, he was raised to the head of moral philosophy department in 1753 being a highly regarded lecturer. After the publication of his first book, …Moral Sentiments he became a significant figure throughout Europe, attracting many students to his school. Smith was ready to move on, shifting his studies to jurisprudence and political economy; his popular lectures reflected this. Historically, and at this time, mercantilism was the prevailing economic theory in Western Europe. This theory held the wealth of nations is based on maximizing trade, leading to a positive trade balance and resulting in the accumulation of monetary reserves, at that time meaning gold and silver. Along with promoting trade, high tariffs to protect your country were a defense mechanism that added to the bottom line. He was influenced by travels to France, meeting with French philosophers who described the downfall of France being the concentration of wealth in the nobility and church and the excessive consumption of goods and services by these groups. Smith lectured that what increased national wealth was labor (not trade), further expounding on what constitutes productive labor and what unproductive labor. His writing that came from his lectures is, "…The Wealth of Nations," considered to be the first book of modern economics. Smith laid the foundations of classical free market theory. He developed the concept of division of labor: workers should be specialized (in their work function) and thus more efficient, leading to more output and greater income. Also how rational self-interest and competition leads to economic prosperity. His ideas were controversial in his lifetime. John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) was mainly known for his studies of business cycles. His book, The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money impacted democratic governments from 1936 to today. His ideas spurred actions in the Depression of spending government funds (basically printing money) to stimulate aggregate demand for goods and thereby grow jobs. There are lots of great biographies and nonfiction books in North library. We need anyone with New York Times best seller large print books to return them, please. Stop by the libraries to pick up your summer books! Gathering Data: Getting Involved to Live an Active Life Data gathering is the first most effectual area in helping get our country club residents involved in community activities. Sun Lakers - Banning, California is a group designed for residents to share news affecting Sun Lakers and announce upcoming community events. Sun Lakes Buy Sell Trade is where residents can post garage sale type items. For both Facebook groups, your request will be reviewed only after you've answered a couple of questions.
