| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2018 | 61 Pickleball Club As you open this month's Lifestyles, our club may be on the courts playing our first tournament of 2018. Thanks to VP Nick Caputo's leadership the tourney begins on Fri., June 1 at 10 am and concludes June 2 during the club's 8 to 10 am scheduled time slot. Even if you aren't playing, or have never played, come on out and watch the action! And stay for some fellowship with the great group comprising Sun Lakes' pickle contingent. A legend of our sport, Pat Carroll, gave a fascinating interview with Sandy Segien, a writer for the Western Region pickleball organization. Pat recently reached age 76 and this former tennis champ and eight- time winner of Pickleball's National Championship, shared some wise insights. She describes her "secret sauce" as "patience and discipline." Pat's book (available on Amazon) is titled Less is More. In it, she tells of discovering pickleball in 2003 while still playing on tennis' senior circuit. She expected her tennis skills to translate directly to pickleball and was shocked to find she needed help, which she found in a Sacramento-area coach. This veteran tennis expert found she was "doing too much!" and learned to master the finesse needed to excel on the pickleball court. We Sun Lakers have the privilege of travel and exploring new venues for our game. In recent years pickleball has established quite a presence in one of the classiest locales in America, Golden Gate Park. This San Francisco institution now boasts several courts built with the cooperation of the tennis club. There are still growing-pains as the demand is keen. All players are invited to join in their morning schedule, MWF and Saturday from 9 am to 12 noon. A remarkable "accidental" benefit of bringing pickleball to Golden Gate is the global impact it has had. Visitors from all over the world flock to Baghdad by the Bay and have taken pickleball back to Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and Australia. It has been a treat in recent weeks to meet new residents interested in trying pickle. We will gladly arrange clinics or just offer times for introductory play to allow folks who have never been on any court to try out America's fastest growing sport. Just give our president, Royce Newman a call at 769-1103 or VP Nick Caputo at 255-7841. Regular club hours are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 8 am. See you on the courts!
