54 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2018
Way back in the summer of '65 some
bored golfers on Bainbridge Island, having
completed their 18 holes, were looking
for something else to do. On a dilapidated
backyard badminton court, using a broken
badminton racquet, a ping pong paddle and
a wiffle ball, the game of Pickleball (allegedly
attributed to the dog Pickles who would
intermittently steal the balls) was born.
In our own Four Seasons history, it was
the year 2013 and Marty Key and Linda
Snipes introduced friends to the game of
Pickleball, playing on the paddle tennis
courts. It caught on and Four Seasons
Pickleball officially began. Fast forward to
present day where we now have eight state-
of-the-art, lighted courts and membership
has grown from two smart, sassy women to
the 80+ members on the roster today! With
brand new safety fences installed, one can
find players of every level on most courts
from dawn until well into the evening.
Helpful, welcoming and always funny (after
all it IS Pickleball), you will find people eager
to welcome you to what Brian Williams has
called "the fastest growing sport in the US."
Recently a FSPC logo was designed and
new shirts and hats are available for order
from LynnRae DuPree. For those of you who
fit into the category "the older you get, the
better athlete you were in the day," this is the
sport for you. Wickedly fun, competitive and
not nearly as tough or running intense as
tennis, this could be your new way to shine!
For specific instructions for come on
down to the courts on Tuesday at 9 am or
Thursday at 4 pm. For questions, concerns
or encouragement contact Pickleball Nancy
Barnaby at (951) 845-0842. See you on the
courts! ~ Julie Stayner
