56 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2018 Tennis Club It was two months later than planned, but our Interclub invitational tennis and BBQ was May 12. Once again the weather threatened to interfere with our plans, as the clouds hovered ominously overhead. Luckily, they did not produce any precipitation and the chilly 47 degree temperature was on the way up to a comfortable cool. Thirty- eight players from both Four Seasons and Sun Lakes engaged in five rounds of social tennis, followed by a BBQ with burgers and hot dogs. We thank the committee members Chuck Beckman, Irve Sturner, and Bernadette Martin and Club member Larry Zimmerman for their work preparing for and putting on this fun event. Our regular play days are scheduled for the last Saturday of every month. Now that we're getting summer temperatures, we begin at 8:30 am and play for about two hours. Players are matched up randomly and then switch after each 20 - 25 minute round of play. Play days are open to all residents of Four Seasons Beaumont. No reservations required – just come on out and join in. To assist those interested in learning or recovering their tennis skills, the Club is providing "Newbie" practices/lessons at 10 am on Tuesdays and Saturdays that are not a Play Day or club event. Based on the laughter emanating from court one, it is evident that both players and "coaches" are having a lot of fun while boosting their tennis talent. Another opportunity to play is coordinated by Bernadette Martin. She will arrange for doubles matches on the second and third Thursdays of the month. These matches are scheduled for 6 and 7 pm, when afternoon heat has dissipated. Coming right up on July Fourth, is the annual Four Seasons Independence Day celebration, involving friendly competitions by many of the clubs in our community. The Tennis Club contribution to the activities is the Red-Blue Team Tennis battle for glory and having one's name etched in perpetuity on a plastic trophy. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all teams are not created equal, that they are endowed by their captains with certain unreliable righties and lefties, and that among these we beget Lets, Faults, and the pursuit of hapless tennis. Freedom is a wonderful thing! Following the Red/Blue battles we proceed to the Lodge Ballroom for patriotic doings, potluck lunching, and to the electrifying awards ceremony where we receive "The Coveted Plastic." This year will mark our seventh annual Red/Blue Event. ~ Steven Hovey
