crusin cronies The Automobile Acionados Group here at Sun Lakes, long term for Old Car Buffs, meet the rst Saturday of each month (except in December). We are open to all Sun Lakers and guests who enjoy car talk, taking tours with our new or old cars and a meal out. Our once a month Saturday begins at 8:30 am in the parking lot of the Main Clubhouse to show off our cars and socialize. From there, we either meet inside the Clubhouse or caravan to a location to have the monthly meeting and breakfast. The exact location is announced well ahead of time. As of this printing, our next meeting is Sat., Jan. 5. We will go to Bobs Big Boy in Calimesa for the meeting and breakfast. All group activities are organized, planned and directed by 1941 COUPE: Owners Richard and Alicia Kramer In 1972, a young insurance inspector rst laid eyes on the skeleton of what was once a beautiful Maroon 1941 Ford business coupe while making an inspection of a salvage yard in Chula Vista, CA. The business was near the Mexican border where a junk yard is called a yonky yard. As fate would have it the young man spotted a dirty, gutted and neglected 41 Coupe in the yard area ready to be dismantled and crushed. He quickly made an offer to the yard owner and his bid was accepted. Having a vision of what the 41 Ford could end up looking like, he fell in love. Having saved the old girl, the next step was to nd out what she still had in her. Fortunately, the engine and drive train were still intact and the yard owner allowed the necessary repairs to be done in his yard, where the Ford sat. The brakes were restored, new tires, a new battery was strapped in, ground connections and cables were redone, and new gasoline was added to the tank. A little carb starter and the old 41 kicked right over and purred. Minor adjustments to the carb, a ve gallon bucket for a seat and off she went to her new home in San Clemente. Back home, the old car was christened La Bamba by my oldest daughter Karen who drove it through her high school days. Both of us spent endless hours hand sanding, changing push rods and driving to Laguna Beach for Sunday Brunch. We had to make sure we always parked on a hill facing down as the battery goes down fast when she played the radio. In those days the starter would fail, the volunteers join us for the camaraderie. We carried a set of tools, spare coil, starter, condenser, voltage regulator and fuel pump, just in case. Countless hours were spent combing through junk yards looking for parts. Finally, I found an original front seat. The project has been a money pit ever since. In researching the title, the original owner had been a WWII sailor and while the sailor was serving our country, his father stored the car in his garage. After the war, the sailor stayed in the Navy and toured the world for his country. As time went by, the sailor lost interest in the old Ford coupe and the father lost interest in storing it. Thats how the salvage yard got involved with the 41 Coupe. The old gal sat in the junk yard for several years, then a very young Kramer came along and resurrected it from the jaws of death and gave it a new California Title, 41 Coupe. art league Artist Suni Godbold will demonstrate her watercolor technique at the general meeting on Sun., Jan. 20, at 2 pm at the South Clubhouse.
