32 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2018 | This month, the Friendship Club presents a double bill of entertainment. Opening the show at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom on Aug. 12, will be Tom Ogden, a comedy magician. Twice voted "Parlour Magician of the Year" by the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, Ogden brings more than thirty years of comedy and magic experience to the stage. Ogden has opened for such headliners as Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, and The Osmonds, and he's performed for celebrities including David Boreanaz, Johnny Depp, and even Ronald Reagan on his 81st birthday. He has appeared in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and Lake Tahoe, and his national TV work includes The World's Greatest Magic II (NBC), The Great Magic of Las Vegas (FOX), and even Days of Our Lives (NBC). Following Ogden's comedy and magic will be the main act, singer and dancer Elijah Rock in Gershwin For My Soul. Long-dedicated to timeless entertainment, Rock is carrying the torch for the legacy of The Great American Songbook. Gershwin For My Soul is the Cleveland-born baritone's brand new show, based on his critically acclaimed album of the same name. Rock's intention is to bring the music of George and Ira Gershwin into its rightful contemporary space. His arrangements range from syncopated updates on Fascinating Rhythm and Our Love is Here to Stay to the rarely heard extended introduction to How Long Has This Been Going On? and a tender version of the delightful S'wonderful. Rock started singing in church at the age of eight, followed by his first Gershwin songs from Porgy & Bess at 16 at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He revived the music of Porgy & Bess in a revolutionary new presentation that took what was originally written and turned it into a pure jazz adaptation. This Porgy & Bess premiered at the Ensemble Theater in Santa Barbara, California to raves from audiences who enjoyed the intimacy, the freshness and Rock's vocal and acting mastery. Tickets for the double bill are $20 for members, $25 for non-resident guests. Doors open at 6 pm, show begins at 7 pm. Make checks out to Friendship Club, and deliver them to 5168 Rio Bravo Drive. For cancellations and information, call Pat at 845-3789 or Judy at 797-0265. A delicious buffet dinner is available in the restaurant for show goers by reservation only, beginning at 4:30 pm.
