| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2018 | 33 Yiddish Culture Club Sun Lakes Yiddish Culture Club will host an evening presentation called "Confronting Discrimination and Securing Justice," featuring Matthew Friedman of the Anti-Defamation League, on Aug. 8 at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Friedman is the Senior Associate Regional Director of the ADL's Los Angeles office. The evening is free to YCC members, and $3 pp for guests, payable at the door. The focus of the program will be hate crimes throughout the United States and here in California. Friedman will highlight the various programs and methods employed by the ADL to combat those crimes and will explore the recent rise in hateful rhetoric and incidents throughout the nation. The presentation will include an overview of the work done by the ADL to pursue fair treatment for all through legislation, education, and on the public stage. Friedman has a Master's Degree in Education and an MBA in Non-Profit Management from American Jewish University (formerly University of Judaism), and a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology from Brandeis University. Prior to becoming Senior Associate Regional Director at the ADL's Pacific Southwest Region, he worked in the Jewish community of Cleveland for three years at the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland and the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland. In his present capacity, he provides assistance for cases of discrimination, hate incidents, and crimes that arise in the community, specifically covering the San Fernando Valley, Northern Los Angeles County, Kern County, and the Inland Empire. He also oversees ADL's local Advocacy and Engagement work, which encompasses outreach to government agencies and elected officials. Mr. Friedman coordinates ADL's Holocaust Education programs, including the LA Holocaust Education Institute, Bearing Fruit for Catholic school educators, and Echoes and Reflections: Leaders in Holocaust Education. Additionally, he acts as the ADL liaison with the LA County Commission on Human Relations. At a time when there is increasing polarity of our society as well as a sharp rise in hate crimes of all types, including anti-Semitism, race-based crimes and extremism, this becomes a serious and important topic for all of us. Let's explore together what the average citizen can do to aid the cause of combating hatred.
