FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2018 55 Tennis Club In honor of the War for Independence, on July Fourth the Tennis Club had its own battle between the Red Team and the Blue Team. Unlike the original War for Independence, this time the Red Coats won, largely thanks to that team dominating the courts in the first battle, or rather, the first round. Three of the Red Team's doubles teams won their matches in dominating fashion. The outcomes were reversed in the second round, but the Reds already had a big enough lead to hang for the overall victory 100 games to 92. Members of the victorious team were Chuck Beckman, Larry Zimmerman, Julie Stayner, Stan Lam, Loren DuChesne, Hilario Luna, Barbara Miller, Bernadette Martin, Peter Garan, and Team Captain, Howard Lyon. Individual winners included Jocelyn Green, with 18 total games won, making her the top woman player in her first time playing in the prestigious tournament. For the men, Chuck Beckman (of course) and Steve Hovey (yah, sure; isn't he the one writing this?) both picked up 17 wins for their respective teams. Also with 17 wins was Julie Stayner. Everyone else had less, so nanner nanner. With less drama, the June Play Day was also a successful event, though it was scheduled at the same time as some other court clubs were having their annual July Fourth competitions. The weather was great, and all 12 players got to play a lot of tennis. One lesson from that day, though. On the courts, danger lurks behind you, and that's not a reference to saggy butts. Former tennis coach Cheryl Smith (and a founding member of the Tennis Club) warned us seniors that we should not back pedal to get a ball. We should turn and run back or slide step to avoid falling backward and further damaging our posteriors. Now I believe her. Ouch! Play Days are open to all residents of Four Seasons Beaumont. No reservations required – just come on out and join in at 8:30 am on the last Saturday of the month. To assist those interested in learning or recovering their tennis skills, the club is providing "Newbie" practices/lessons at 10 am on every Tuesday and Saturday that are not a Play Day or Club event. Please note that the Thursday night doubles matches have been discontinued. Players can make their own arrangements and take advantage of the cooler evening temperatures. ~ Steven Hovey Fourth of July Red/Blue Tournament participants Captain Howard with winning warriors Barb, Chuck and Julie Fourth of July Individual Winners: Chuck Beckman, Steve Hovey and Jocelyn Green
