FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2018 57 Fishing Club A great many people ask me if it is better to fish from a boat or on the shore. To be really truthful I have had better fishing off a boat. Let me explain why a boat is better. With a boat you can go all over the lake or river or ocean. I love to troll when I am fishing from a boat because it allows you to find where the fish are. Once you have found the fish you just anchor and get ready to load the boat up with fish. There are some lakes that will not allow you to fish in a boat. Then the choice is easy. At Yucaipa Regional Park and Fisherman's Retreat in Redlands you can only fish from the shore. I have had pretty good luck fishing in these two lakes and they are really close to home. I will let you know right now that the Salton Sea is a dead sea. Because of the salt content, the fish can no longer reproduce. I talked to a Ranger at the Salton Sea and he informed me that there were no longer any fish in the Salton Sea. I fished that body of water for over 40 years in a boat and from the shore. When I fished at the Salton Sea it was not a matter of catching fish it was what kind of fish you wanted. I would not keep any fish that was not big enough for me to filet. If you do not have a boat you can always rent one. Just call the lake you want to fish at and reserve a boat for the day you want to go fishing. Always ask if they have a senior discount or if they have a deal on the rent on certain days. You can also ask how the fishing is going and they will always tell you the best spots where the fish are biting. The best bet to catch fish is to hire a fishing guide. He will use his fishing gear and teach you how to use the various rods and reels that you will be fishing with that day. Because he fishes for a living he will always try to get a limit of fish. I liked to hire guides because they would show me where the fish were and how to catch them. I then took my boat out and knew exactly where to go and what bait to use. I have advised readers in other articles that fishing can become very expensive. The cheap way to go fishing is to go with a friend who has all the gear. You can also go to private lakes where you do not need a fishing license. At Fisherman's Retreat, you pay a fee of $14 dollars to fish and you do not need a fishing license. In my next article I will inform you how to be safe when you are fishing. I have seen too many of my friends get hurt while fishing and it can happen to you. Tight lines to all my fishing buddies and remember even if we are getting old we can still go out and catch that prize fish of a lifetime. ~ Richard Carrasco Richard's newest boat came with elegant upgrades like this 19th century cannon
