8 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2018 WITH TERRY FEARS, DESIGNER EXTRAORDINAIRE By Cindy Graves Terry and his bride grew up across the street from each other and married when she was 17 and he was 20. They've been a great design partnership for the last 55 years. In spite of the fact that Terry gained industry notoriety throughout his illustrious artistic career (including being Tommy Bahamas' top Visual Merchandising Designer) Betty has always been in the background with great ideas and suggestions. This is apparent when they prepare for the Holiday Home Tour. Betty's creative inspiration is sprinkled throughout their Christmas wonderland project. Besides The Lodge and The Summit holiday and seasonal décor, Terry has been instrumental in assisting the Ballroom Dance Club with many of their Dinner Dance themes as well as a million other projects including design help for the huge Carol's Kitchen Anniversary Gala at Morongo last month. Not only is Terry incredibly talented, but he's also one of the nicest human beings I've ever met. As I mentioned, I call him my "design hero" because before Terry volunteered to help me with holiday decorating, we had Social Committee in charge of the decorations. I would help them and, like little elves, we'd start decorating toward the end of the evening and then work throughout the night on the tree, the mantle and whatever else we thought needed to be decorated. The result was always festive, but there were four or five "Chef 's in the Kitchen" so the design was always a compromise of the volunteers. It was also a huge undertaking. In 2013, the Board of Directors approved a separate holiday décor budget. We realized we needed an actual designer to unify the concept and ensure that the theme would be carried throughout the facilities. Our "knight in shining armor," Terry Fears, came to our rescue and shouldered this formidable project. To our delight, he took our holiday ambiance to a whole new level. We've been so DECKING HALLS ost people walk into The Lodge and are awed at the beautifully decorated mantle. Who is this elusive Master of Design who magically shows up every season to change out the mantle and Lobby décor? Well, his name is Terry Fears and he's my design hero. Terry has lived in Four Seasons with his beautiful wife Betty for the last 10 years. the
