RV layout and customization is limited only by imagination and driven by that great mother of invention – need (okay sometimes just a wild impulse). For example the Atomic Camper (pictured) owned by Vic Peluso and Carrie Doyle of Alaska. Vic and Carrie bought the 16-foot camper from the original owner/builder Bill Guernsey in 2018. This camper, which looks like a space ship out of Flash Gordon, has features you'd think wouldn't fit in a small trailer, including solar panels for boondocking (camping with no furnished amenities), a 20-gallon water tank, propane water heater, portable toilet and a shower. (Find more information by searching the Internet with "atomic camper" or view the camper's Facebook page by typing "@atomiccamper" in the Facebook search box.) There are custom RVs that are used by music groups, athletes, and celebrities. According to HGTV.com, Simon Cowell, of American Idol and X Factor fame, has a trailer that expands to a two-story, 22-feet high, 14-feet wide, 40-ton, 22-wheel behemoth. (More info? Internet search – HGTV Simon Cowells motor home.) Okay, let's get back to us normal folks. In a QuiltingCompany.com article by Dawn Cavanaugh, readers were introduced to RV owner and famed quilting instructor, Nichole Wilde. Nichole was tired of flying, and, after a series of personal losses, she decided to follow her dream to ditch airports and find a less stressful way to travel with all of her quilting and sewing paraphernalia. She bought a 40- foot Alpha motorhome and modified it by removing furniture and installing her 10-foot quilting longarm frame and a sewing machine station. Since 2016, she travels in style driving her massive RV to teaching engagements and tradeshows throughout the US. (Internet search – Quilting Company Nichole Wilde – and click on the link "Quilting The Quilt: Oh, The Places You Can Go.") So we can lay to rest the obsolete ideas that RVs are just for camping, and perish the idea that RVs are boring or cookie cutter! From space ships to mobile quilting "she-sheds," RVs are flexible, hard-working, and sometimes works of art. The sky's the limit to RV design – or should I say the stars are the limit?
