46 | OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2019 | It is a new year for Paddle Tennis! Under the experienced guidance of Sally Palmer, Allan Singer, and Brenda Stafford, a paddle tennis clinic was held Dec. 3, for new players and those returning to the game. Approximately 14 people came out for a fun-filled two hours of instruction and games. Afterwards at a pizza dinner, it was decided we would meet again each month for a regular drop-in event. The game is on a pickleball-sized court using a different paddle and ball, and tennis-type scoring. A lot of interest was generated from the clinic, and even the beginners advanced quickly in their ability and were anxious to play again! A second drop-in event was held on Jan. 14, and future dates will be announced to members by email. We had a very successful Dues Day, signing up 233 renewals and 35 new members – and renewals continue daily! Many thanks go out to our Dues Day volunteers for their excellent job! In addition, thank you "paddle tennis" representatives for explaining that sport to both new and renewing members! Pickleball classes for brand new players started on Jan. 19, 9:15 to 11 am at HOA Courts #4 and 5, and will continue each Saturday for four to six weeks, taught by Mike Hoggatt and Bob Berthel. Come wearing courts shoes – paddles are provided. Classes are free to all OHCC residents. Our first meeting of the year was held on Jan. 9, when president Herb Livsey explained responsibilities of our newly organized Board of Directors, sports committees, and volunteer positions. We have a great year in store for our members – do not forget to join so that you will be notified of all upcoming events! Our dues are $10.
