| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2019 | 45 Swim & Wellness Welcome to the new and returning Swim & Wellness Club members. We look forward to interesting events and speakers this year! On Feb. 21 at 2 pm is the first Swim & Wellness Club meeting of 2019. We have a very exciting speaker scheduled. Dr. Teresa Dudarewicz is Board Certified in Integrative, Regenerative, Holistic Medicine, Functional, and Nutritional Medicine. At her practice in San Diego, California, she provides an integrative approach to medical care specializing in preventing and reversing early cognitive decline. She studied under Dr. Dale Bredesen of the Buck Institute for Aging, the author of The End of Alzheimer's. "The Bredesen Protocol" certifies Dr. Dudarewicz. Current research is showing a link between nutrients deprived, processed, and often irradiated food, environmental toxins, contaminated water, chronic infections, and degenerative diseases like dementia. It takes about 20 years to develop chronic illness. We should be testing patients brain function around age 40 just as if we are screening for prostate and breast cancer. It is almost all about lifestyle, many times preventable and reversible! For additional information, check her website: brainpowerpearls.com. Swimmers owe a special thanks to Tim Pentel and Michael Gordon for appearing before the Master Board with suggested language clarification on pool rules. The clarification follows: The pool is reserved for lap swimming only from 6 to 8:45 am daily where floating lane markers are in place. Lap swimming is permitted whenever the pool is open except when there is a scheduled class or activity. Users must share the pool and upon entering, must observe the activities already in progress and take care not to interfere with anyone. Swimmers have a right to the lane they are already occupying. Other users must take care not to get in the way. Swimmers must watch where they are going in order to avoid collisions. All users, especially swimmers and others in motion must be extra cautious to prevent collisions with children. Leesa teaches two aqua fitness classes per week on Monday and Thursday at 9 am. Rene's water fitness class is on Friday at 9:30 am. The meeting schedule is as follows: Feb. 21, April 18, Aug. 21 and Oct. 17 from 2 to 3 pm. Kaiser Senior Advantage Series sponsored by the Swim & Wellness Club: April 5 – Dermatology Aug. 23 – Men's Wellness and Prostrate Health. Last November the 2018 Open Match Play Golf Tournament, sponsored by Ocean Hills Realty, was completed. Mike Stern defeated Jerry Moskovitz to claim his fourth Championship since 2012 when the Open started. For many years, Joe Newmyer ran the men's match play, as well as starting the Open (available to any golfer) and helping Sally Palmer with the lady's match play. Since Joe has moved out of the Village, Bob Fisher has agreed to step into his shoes. Being a slow golf period with so few tournaments only now resuming on a regular basis, I found some recent comments from Joe interesting about the beginnings of the Herb Stark Match Play at OHCC. To wit; From Joe Newmyer in a recent email: "I think Herb Stark proposed the original Match Play tournament concept in 2003. When the Board agreed, I went to Herb and told him I would like to help. He agreed and he did a great job of recruiting and I did the brackets. We did that for several years and then he moved to an assisted living facility and I ran it from then on. Tom Vetlesen helped every year and always provided the handicap indices on a timely basis. After Herb moved, I suggested that we name the Match Play tournament after him and the Board agreed. Herb's legs would not let him walk the golf course any more. One time he got the Match Play Flight Champions a chance to play at Shadow Ridge and he asked me to join them. He played a little bit that day and I could tell he was a very good golfer. He collected golf bag tags from all over the world. He had several hundred and they covered a wall in his house." Joe thanks for your well-received input on the history of the OHCC Golf Club! Fair winds and following seas! Golf Course Frost Delays: From the Golf Course Committee We are in the cool season again and have had several cold nights. Jon Cancel, our Golf Course Superintendent, has had to delay play on the following day due to frost on the course. Please be respectful of this delay notice, as it is necessary to protect our golf course, especially the greens. To help with this Maureen Huitt has placed a banner announcing golf course and frost delays on the HOA website; please call the golf hot line for closure information. The Committee has also issued an eblast to forewarn our golfers of this occurrence. Finally, please be respectful as this measure is necessary to protect our golf course. Golf Club
